Did The CFL Help Form The CTV Network?

Would there be a CTV network if there hadn't been a CFL? It's a question worth asking on this Grey Cup Sunday. Here's the story from 1961.

1961 was also the year CHCH gave CBC the finger. The Mother Corporation had always donated Thursday nights to their affilliates to air local programming. CHCH used those evenings to broadcast Hamilton Jr. Red Wings OHL hockey games. By 1961, station management felt if we can program one night a week, why not all seven. So armed with a shopping list of programs they wanted to purchase they headed off to Hollywood with only one request. Pre-release rights over the U.S. networks, which the studios had no problem granting. CHCH became extremely successful with all their Hollywood purchases.
