Is Blue Jays Swearing The New Normal On TV & Radio?
I heard a lot of this when The Fan took the Sportsnet feed live. Big mistake. There were more "F" bombs flying during the locker room celebrations than there are in your average school yard. And they knew they were on national TV. The hosts on 590 mostly sloughed it off, saying it was live television/radio and they were celebrating.
They also noted that's why you always tell the guy you're interviewing "we're live across the country on Sportsnet." Not that they seemed to care.
All of which prompts the Toronto Star to wonder if this has somehow become acceptable on TV and by extension, radio, since there's no one to bleep out anything when you're going live.
"In a statement to the Star, Sportsnet said it is the “nature of live broadcasting that sometimes unintended content makes it to air.”
We'll see what the CBSC has to inevitably say about that, since there's bound to be complaints to them about the language. But I have a feeling that as long as the Jays keep winning, this is only the beginning. Or should that be "big innings?"
The Blue Jays keep swearing on (bleeping) national television. Is this the new normal?

Sportsnet should have issued a written warning that this is a live broadcast.

I don't really see the issue here. All the swearing was done after 9pm and on a sports cable channel broadcasting a live celebration. The article says that the CBSC allows the f-bomb, and it's variations, regardless of the number of times from 9pm to 6am. And the CBSC only issues recommendations and is not affiliated with any government body. The CRTC prefers to let the broadcasters regulate themselves when it comes to sexual content and profanity and this is where the CBSC comes in.
The quote from the concerned viewer who called the Star and said "to have that on air is just unbelievable" and "we must have some decorum somewhere in this world" is a odd response. Canadian TV occasionally drops the F word and shows some nudity in movies and other programming and has been doing this since the early 70's. Remember the Baby Blue movies and the uncut features like the Godfather, Bridesmaids and JFK on City, CHCH and CBC?
Some of CBC's supposed funny sitcoms like Baroness von Sketch Show and Workin' Moms are filled with profanity. CTV has been featuring Letterkenny and Trailer Park Boys all night on Friday's unedited.
And no, this isn't the new normal now and wasn't 50 years ago. So it is odd when this "concerned" viewer found the live celebratory swearing which happened well after 9pm the other night "unbelievable."

I'm not bothered by profanity, either, although I can see why a parent watching the post-game celebrations with younger kids might have been, especially when they weren't expecting it.
But remember, it also went out very plainly on the Fan590, which doesn't have those post-9 PM rules like TV does.
I'd give them both a pass, but I do recall listening to it and was surprised by how many of them got by.

CTV ran The Sopranos uncut and the only editing CHCH did on The Godfather was cutting the audio of the squeeking door when Sonny was having sex with one of the bridesmaids at the wedding. When CITY ran Boys In The Hood, they left the "F's" in but did their best to edit the "M's" They missed a few. When a blockbuster movie made its debut on broadcast television, the U.S. network version was always a few minutes behind the Canadian telecast. When language or an excessively violent scene happened, I would watch the Canadian version, then switch over to see how much was edited south of the border.
