It's the annual campaign for Truth and Reconciliation Day, designed to give the Indigenous a say amidst all the other causes vying for your attention. The yearly event will be held on Sept. 30th this year, with hundreds of radio stations across the country taking part in airing special short programming segments.
There are seven Toronto stations that will broadcast them. The list:
CFTR, CHFI, The Fan 590, Kiss 92.5, Virgin 99.9, CHUM-FM and CFRB. Oddly, I did not see any Toronto Corus properties on the nationwide station list, which you can see here.
Ontario markets also taking part include Orangeville, Windsor, Niagara Falls, London, Kitchener and Ottawa, among others.
It runs for much of the broadcast day, from 12PM-12AM.

Thanks for this. Now I know which stations to avoid on September 30.

Seconded. With all due respect, I won't be listening, partly because I feel that the media and other businesses and organizations in general are not being sincere with their land acknowledgements and other Indigenous-related words and actions - they're really only doing it to show themselves in a positive light and to show that "[they] care."
My wife comes from Mohawk ancestry, on the Tyendinaga territory near Belleville, and she feels the same way; she has more than once rolled her eyes when certain radio stations in our area say "broadcasting from the traditional unceded territory of...", because she knows they don't really mean it and aren't being sincere about it.

168 stations chose not to participate anymore. I believe that includes stations that declined last year as well.

What the stations nead to do instead is switch to all indiginess community lead programing in english and local languages for the entire day with nothing but music by indiginess artists or have artists submit indiginess language versions of songs in the station's format.

Nobody would sign up for that..... ratings poison

Corus stations are participating. They may have just been a bit late confirming, because…you know.

If that's really what you want, you should probably tune into both CBC radio and TV, which is going to O.D. on this stuff all day long.

If the stations do not want to be woak, a great idea is to get feedback from the actual first-nations communities and to not just have the cbc altering its programing.
For stations like 1010, maybe having elders host for the day and have the community call in.

This is going to run all day on almost every station. It's a nice observance overall, but in the end, it does nothing to really help those who need it the most. But if you're not ready for it, it could be a long day on the radio for some. Even Sirius XM will be carrying some special programming in Canada.
Somewhat ironically, it's called a Day To Listen. Will you be?

I had no choice, RA. I had to take my mother to the doctor this afternoon and lone behold, playing through every ceiling speaker in the waiting area and every examination room was CHFI.
This morning, I made a point of listening to WBEN's 6:30am newscast. Their lead story was commercial traffic not being able to get into Canada at all 3 crossings. They said later that all crossing into Canada nationwide were impacted for reasons unknown. This story did not exist on Toronto radio until mid morning, when 680 quoted US media and CHCH as reporting this situation. Checked CBC's website at 10am and not a word about it. Things that make you go Hmmm...

I saw a report that WGRZ and WKBW did on the border problem. WGRZ's piece was over 8 minutes and somewhat misleading and very rambling. They made it sound like Canada had banned all commercial traffic from the US. Trying to make the story more than it was. WKBW had a much shorter report and right off the top told their audience it was a computer system failure at Canadian entry points. WGRZ didn't mentioned the computer issue until near the end of their long report.

I did listen, quite a bit in fact and even though I think this is a worthy use of our airwaves, there was not a lot of variation between stations, they basically all did interviews mostly with those effected by residential schools obviously. Although some were disturbing, they were informative, but still, a lot of talking. I think Radio One was the only station that played appropriate music, William Prince for one! I also noticed that a couple of stations didn’t recognize it at all, or I missed that segment. I do wonder, like RadioActive, that it is a nice observance overall, but is it helping anyone or just a PR move?

CBC Special Programming For National Truth And Reconciliation Day
The CBC had to move Corrie Street to 1pm to make room for all their "Special" programming. The only time Corrie normally gets bumped out of its 7pm slot is during the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

I was out in the car yesterday afternoon for over an hour. What a beautiful day, and the countryside was almost shimmering it was so bright. I had the radio on and did hear some of the stories on various stations.
Overall what I heard was well done. Stations seemed to have regular programming and would acknowledge Truth and Reconsiliation Day various times per hour and then run one of the produced breaks with a guest who would give their thoughts and memories. I think it was Q107 that played an indigenous artist right before a break. The song was rock oriented, wasn't classic rock and I had never heard of the artist before. The song itself wasn't bad.
I also believe overall this is a worthwhile project. Will some good come of it? Yes, it already has, look at the awareness level now of the iniquity and cruelty of the Indian residential school system run by the government and various churches. Is it a PR move? Of course, everything is PR. Is it helping anyone? Absolutely, the healing, talking and most important, listening is for everyone. From this all people can and will move forward.

So, the commercial traffic issue at our borders, finally made the news on Global TV on Thursday and CBC on Friday evening. Apparently it isn't the first time these CBSA "system issues" have happened but still, it seemed very odd that a news story about freight being held up crossing into Canada, wasn't newsworthy here for two to three days, considering the number of trucks that were stuck for days trying to cross into Canada.
Finally, I do apologize for hijacking this thread with an unrelated subject. I only threw it in here because this story broke in US media on the same day as T&R.
