Is it me or has a new annoying expression crept its way into radio and other media over recent months?
I refer to the irritating phrase, "that being said..."
I can't unhear it now when I'm listening to the radio or watching TV news shows.
Hosts, guests, callers and speakers all seem to be using this bloody facile and vacuous expression, "that being said" or its variant, "that said."
It's a lazy bit of language that excuses what comes after the phrase, to absolve the speaker of any critical thought.
It's akin to the time warn trick of saying, "I'm no racist... but..."
It is a way of getting out of any responsibility for what outrageous or ignorant opinion you are about to espouse.
First you give the reasonable and acceptable statement, then your own stupid biased and ignorant opinion.
Anyway that's my rant du jour.
Try listening for it when you listen to talk radio or TV interviews.
