Much as I hate to reintroduce this topic, it's pretty important - ABC has pulled episodes of Jimmy Kimmel for the foreseeable future, after the host's comments about the assassination of the right wing advocate. It came after one of its biggest affiliate groups took offence to the statements.
ABC will only say the suspension is "indefinite" and has not, as of this posting, fired Kimmel or cancelled his show. It's not clear what they may be putting in his timeslot instead.
ABC Pulls ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’ Indefinitely After Host’s Charlie Kirk Comments

Remember when "late night wars" referred to the competition between late night hosts rather than attempts by the government's and its political allies' war against late night show?

So much for free speech!

Regardless of whether or not the suspension is temporary I think the chances of Kimmel's contract being renewed after it ends next year just went down the toilet.

Yep, first CBS caves and now Disney's ABC. This is so terrible for free speech on television that it's almost too much for words. Not that you'd be allowed to say them. I hate where this is heading.

Probably too expensive to do that vs. just replacing him with someone more "friendly" to the administration, and paying out the contract.

They won't replace him unless they're told to. Late night TV was already rapidly declining, and no tame replacement will have time to build an audience.

They're probably negotiating his exit as we speak.
The Trump-appointed FCC chair is also threatening to pull the licences of ABC affiliates over Kimmel.

The Hollywood reporter story has the quote. He doesn't even mention Kirk. He was saying the shooter was probably a MAGA guy. And of course, the president has said the "extreme left" is to blame. So when does the president get cancelled???? I'm so glad I don't live in that shithole USA.

Amen to that.

Censorship is the worst I've seen in my lifetime. Yours too, probably.

I believe this is the controversial monologue from Monday.

FCC Chairman Brendan Carr huffed and puffed and blew the house of Kimmel down...

Well it looks like current third place finisher Fallon will be #1 next season.

Remember the GOP's whining about cancel culture?
America is circling the drain.

From the ABC website:
Wednesday night's scheduled guests:
Wanda Sykes ("Wanda Sykes: Please & Thank You" stand-up comedy tour); Jay Shetty; Cooking Demonstration by Chef Christian Petroni ("Parm to Table")
I'm frankly surprised they haven't taken down the show page site yet.

No matter what happens to Jimmy Kimmel in the near future, he will always be a legend to me for his roasting of Jay Leno after the whole Conan O'Brien debacle.
The late night era feels done and over.

The Chief Censor reacts to tonight's developments:
“Great News for America: The ratings challenged Jimmy Kimmel Show is CANCELLED,” Trump wrote on Truth Social Wednesday. “Congratulations to ABC for finally having the courage to do what had to be done. Kimmel has ZERO talent, and worse ratings than even Colbert, if that’s possible. That leaves Jimmy and Seth, two total losers, on Fake News NBC. Their ratings are also horrible. Do it NBC!!! President DJT”

Sort of odd that CNN has been wall to wall coverage of Kimmel and almost nothing of the shooting of five police officers in Pennsylvania this afternoon. Three were killed and two are still in critical condition. Jake Tapper mentioned the shooting at 5pm this afternoon as breaking news but still lead with other stories. I know it's a busy day but CNN is just getting around to the shooting towards the end of Anderson Cooper's program. Any other time they would have been all over this. Not much information so far what happened.

For everybody's sanity, please stop reposting the POTUS' social media posts. If we wanted to see/hear what he is saying, we would go to his socials. RA, remove ALL of DJT's quotes etc. from this board NOW. IMMEDIATELY. FOREVER. I am sick and tired of all of you just parroting Dumb Fuck Donnie's every word - YOU DO NOT NEED TO DO THIS AT ALL!!!! There are MILLIONS of other places where we could go if we wanted to know what that malignant narcissistic piece of shit said at any given moment. THIS BOARD SHOULD NOT BE ONE OF THEM!!!!

This may explain why the cancellation happened:
Nexstar, the largest owner of local television stations in the United States, announced Tuesday that it would be acquiring rival Tegna in a $6.2 billion mega-deal that would reshape the landscape of local media as the Trump administration seems poised to loosen regulatory limits.
In fact, seemingly alluding to the presumption that Donald Trump’s handpicked Federal Communications Commission chief Brendan Carr would approve the deal despite current restrictions in place, Nexstar CEO Perry Sook heaped praise on the administration in his company’s announcement of the deal.
They obviously want this merger deal to happen very badly and need the Trump administration's approval.
It's an exact repeat of CBS and Colbert and the Skydance merger all over again.

And this is why I try to avoid this kind of topic. However, in the Kimmel case (and Colbert before him) it is such a big broadcast story that it's almost impossible NOT to mention.
Normally, I would not think a Trump quote would be a good fit. But it shows the small mindedness, extreme narcissism, and the self aggrandizement of this classless, narrow minded boor of a man better than anything could.
I know you would like it removed, but look at it from a different angle. Nothing could show you exactly what he is better than his own words. For that reason, I think in this context it should stay up here. I would remind you that it doesn't happen often. But it makes the point better than any of us could, showing just what he is, using his own ego-bloated words.
And by the way, I just finished watching a good hour of the U.K. Channel 4's 2 hour special on Trump, timed for his visit to Britain. It features actual footage of Trump making outrageous claims about everything from the last "rigged" election to wars he personally claims to have resolved singlehandedly to the price of eggs going down during his tenure.
After each clip, they super the truth of what really happened, in almost every case completely contradicting his blowhard claims, and attribute each real fact to a specific and credible source seen on screen.. It is a great special and if you have a VPN you can set to the U.K., I could not recommend it more.
You'll have to sign up for it using an email address and a password, but otherwise, it's completely free.

It'll never happen but imagine an all-star Hollywood Reporter or Variety very large roundtable featuring Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Fallon, Jimmy Kimmel, Dave Letterman, maybe add Marc Maron, Sarah Silverman, John Cleese and Eric Idle, Christopher Guest, Jaime Lee Curtis, Ricky Gervais, Emma Thompson and a few other writers, actors, comedians discussing the teutonic changes in the entertainment industry and broadcasting... Holy moly it'd be darn interesting.

Sadly, it looks like Colbert and Kimmel will soon have the time to do it!

He said something a lot more "offensive", "insensitive" and downright heinous about unvaccinated people back in 2021 and no disciplinary action and considerably less controversy-per-capita resulted from that. I don't think I agree with what he said, but this strikes me as something that they may fear could run afoul of advertisers, which is a great way for anybody in the industry to lose their jobs and even their careers, especially in today's day & age of hyper-consolidation and resultingly higher-than-ever stakes.
In the end, this was probably going to happen anyway, one way or another at one point or another. The economy of traditional media that supported late night broadcast network TV in generations past no longer exists, and Stephen Colbert's show was just the first major casualty. I'm not saying that any of this is good, I actually like Jay Leno, but it's just the way it is these days.

I wonder if both Colbert & Kimmel will one day wind up with their own YouTube shows, where they will hopefully be able to do and say whatever they want. That seems to be where shows like this are heading, with younger demos already watching the "highlights" the next day.

That's pretty much the future, and where many of the most popular podcasters and digital content creators already are.
