They're all out west, but Broadcast Dialogue reports that Global B.C. took the brunt of it. As many as 45 people are gone, more evidence of the turmoil and trouble at Corus.
Unifor confirms 45 layoffs at Global News in B.C., Alberta

Of the 46 jobs impacted, 26 are journalists.
That's a lot of people who were making content. There can't be many people left to make the local news LOCAL. I hope everyone will be able to find work.

The layoffs at Global BC follow the recent contract negotiations/settlement. Word is that Corus has laid off employees in a number of functional groups / job titles.
The affected employees will be allowed to reapply for a new job function which will be created, which seems to be a heavy handed way to change contract language and eliminate jobs titles/functional groups.

Do you think there are more to come? And could this hit Toronto?

My understanding is that one producer position has been eliminated in Toronto. The position was attached to Global's Toronto Morning Show.

Get a load of this statement a Global spokesperson gave to Broadcast Dialogue:
“As part of our efficiency review process across Corus, we have made some difficult but necessary changes to create a more sustainable future for the company and our News division,” the spokesperson said, in an emailed statement. “We are applying new workflows and ways of working, using the latest technology that will enable us to pave the way forward for the future of Global News. As a result, certain roles within some stations have been impacted.”
In other words, more machines and less human beings to come?

Also probably means that the humans still remaining will have more "workflow" heaped on them for the same price.

Global BC is the last station in the network to have all their newscasts be live and locally presented from their own studios and control room. Plus they have a their own 24-hour regional news channel much like CP24, Global National’s production base is there, and Global Okanagan’s newscasts originate from there now. It sounds like the “MMC” model is being brought in full force there.

If I’m not mistaken a portion of their 11pm news is now pre-recorded. Last week I was watching and the live anchor Jordan Armstrong said that Sophie Lui would be back after the commercial break with more news. As far as I know Sophie is only there for the 5:00 and 6:00 casts, so I’m presuming these are prerecorded segments.

Pretty much the same in Eastern Ontario. "Pre-recorded" sounds so politically incorrect; they want you to use "look live."

After reading about all the disappearing live local newscasts across the country, I suppose I should be thankful that here in Toronto CFTO has a live 6pm newscast seven nights [six during NFL season for OTA folks] a week. However, it still pisses me off that there is no weather presenter 7 nights per week and they should at least have someone who knows something about sports from TSN do a brief report nightly for the casual sports fan who doesn't watch every game.

in Calgary, for a market its size, there are ZERO live, locally presented late night newscasts:
- Global News at11 is MMC and majority presented from Edmonton
- CityNews is anchorless, and any anchors that appear are from Toronto
- CBC Calgary News is a repeat of the 6 PM news
- CTV News Calgary is pre-taped at 10 PM
- CFCN/CTV Calgary
