See The Largest AM Transmitter In The Western Hemisphere

Unless you know this already, you might not guess it. It's PJB's mighty signal, a DXers delight on AM 800 and one I'm sure many have picked up at night, even if they weren't sure what it was. For those who don't know, the station is located in Bonaire in the Netherland Antilles, a small island near Venezuela, with a population of just 24,000.

The place may be small, but the transmitter packs a punch. Once at 500,000 watts, it now broadcasts at less than that. But it still brings its Christian-based program to a large section of the world including North America. Chances are if you ever scan the dial, you'll eventually hear it, even with CKLW, CJAD and CJBQ on the same frequency.

A broadcast engineer recently made his way there to tour the place, and while a lot of what he wrote about is fairly technical, the photos themselves are really something. You can join him on his PJB tour here.

A DXer replied to the story, and noted how crazy the 800 AM frequency is.

Coincidentally, the Telos Alliance, a major producer of broadcast equipment including digital audio consoles and phone systems, posted this morning on Facebook about that station and that it's using one of Telos' Axia iQ boards, among other stuff. The following link should work for just about any user, whether or not they use FB.

As a teen, PJB was always dominant at night. I could hear CKLW in the background.
