Canadian Open broadcasting question?

I recall when the Canadian Open used to have a separate Canadian broadcast, and I even remember the early 1990s, when even the first two rounds were broadcast on TV in Canada. I'm just wondering when all this started to change. If someone could help or shed light on this, it would be greatly appreciated.

I also believe it used to be on the weekend in the fall 🍁

Re: Canadian Open broadcasting question?

Well, when Glen Abbey became the "permanent" home of the Canadian Open in 1977 the tournament was held in the later part of June. Then it started to move around slightly...   by the mid 90s, the Canadian Open was typically held in mid September.  This iirc was due to the Can Open no longer being a major event of the PGA Tour.

Re: Canadian Open broadcasting question?

Prize money is a lot less too. Winner gets $1.7M. Compare that to the Masters at $4.1M or the British Open at $3.1M.

Re: Canadian Open broadcasting question?

Except for the PGA Tour's Signature events, the Canadian Open prize money is in line with all other tournaments. The Masters and The Open (not called British) are golf majors, so they are different.

If I recall correctly, CBC used to broadcast the event, and the I think CTV took over. By the late 80s and early 90s when the event was moved to September, the Canadian Open was relegated to cable only coverage in the US because the big networks were broadcasting football. I don't recall if the Canadian networks did their own coverage or just picked up the US cable feed.

By the time it moved back to mid summer in 2007, CBS picked up the coverage and I believe the Canadian networks used their feed.

BTW, TSN has had early round coverage for a while. They picked up the PGA Tour's stream at 6:45 a.m. Thursday and Friday and switched to Golf Channel coverage at 3:00 p.m. They also carried the PGA Tour's stream Saturday and Sunday mornings.

We're talking about domestically produced telecasts, not simulcasts, but yes.... CHCH used to simulcast the world feed of LIV
