The days are long gone when radio stations give away anything beyond money and concert tickets. But back in the classic days of Top 40, everyone had something to reward listeners for lending their ears. It could be T-shirts or key chains, something unique that directly tied into the station - a reminder that cash literally could not buy.
I had one of the cards below, although they never called my name on air and to add insult to injury, they misspelled my surname! But I still have that card to this day, mistake and all.
I do have one weird memory about this. My older brother was also a Chum-Bug, although I didn't know it back then. One day, a young neighbour kid named Debbie came pounding on the front door of the house, all excited. "Ricky!", she screamed at my brother, "I just heard your name called on CHUM. You've gotta call them right away!"
We had no idea about any of it, but he phoned the station, telling them what happened. They said they had no idea what he was talking about and apologized but he hadn't won anything. And that was the closest any of my family came to getting anything out of a Chum-Bug card. But it sure was exciting in that moment!
Another promotional item came from CKFH:
I always loved the T-shirts best and won a few of them over the years, although never from Toronto. Here are the two I called long distance to snag. Only one still fits!
Did you ever win something from a radio station you loved? Do you still have it?

I still have a key chain from WHAS Louisville, where the late Joe Donovan did "The Rock and Roll Revival" all nights from 1977 to 1997.

I love looking at broadcast promotional items from days gone by. Somewhere I have a Bob and Doug McKenzie pin from CJME/Z99 in Regina from the early 80s, going to look for it! Thanks for sharing RA!

I won a CFTR t-shirt shortly after they switched to top 40 and I won a Taylor & Moore T-shirt from WPHD. No I don't have either of them now and I doubt they would fit me.

Wow. First time I've ever seen anything from CFGM. Nice stuff!

The Virgin pin is also a USB thumb drive.

I have won quite a few radio items over the years and still have some. The one T Shirt I wish I still had was from the early CFNY with the logo "The Only One."
Here some T Shirts I still have:

Hey Fitz: What question did you have to answer correctly to win the 97ROCK Professor P t-shirt. Very cool shirt. Hopefully it still fits.

The T-Shirt still fits. Afraid I don't remember the question. I went back to check my records and by the time I won that on May 10/2000 I had stopped listing the question which I did for number of years.. Below is the entry for the win:
Edit: Just notticed on the sheet that I had won a CBL T-shirt and baseball cap and both may be long gone.

I actually found the CBC baseball cap. The vast majority of contests I won were based on music trivia and I looked back at my records and the first contest I won was on CHUM FM in 1972 and I identified folkie Eric Von Schmidt. Not sure if I could do that now. Reminds me of that line in the Dylan/Byrds song Younger Than Yesterday, Actually My Back Pages. . "I was so much older then I'm younger than that now"
