Mark Carney pledged to not only continue funding the CBC (and make it statutory, mkaing it more difficult to remove future bucks), but to also boost its budget by $150 million.
Will that result in more extended or better programming? If he delivers on that pledge, it will be interesting to see where that money will be spent and if viewers and listeners will notice. An expansion of news programming was one of the areas it appears that extra dough could be used.

Knowing the CBC, they just hire more to their already bloated ranks!

No to fat cat corner office poobahs in the CBC. Yes to the journalism and off beat programs and stories that they tell so well.

I am sure some of that money will be assigned to Radio-Canada which is widely viewed in Quebec and Radio One which has a large number of loyal listeners in many Canadian markets. It is the English television network that draws the ire of most Canadians. The majority of its programming is absolutely appalling. I don't have any numbers to back it up, but I suspect the CBC's most watched program [other than sports] isn't even Canadian, Coronation Street.

Poilievre made a mistake trying to make CBC an issue early in the campaign, and his foolish and poorly thought out defunding of CBC English TV. At one point he said he would defund radio, but suddenly didn't talk about that anymore.
Also significant is the fact that he lost his seat in Carleton which is part of the Region of Ottawa. The Ottawa Region's biggest employer is the federal government and where the head office for CBC-Radio Canada is located.
Not a smart move to be campaigning to defund a major high profile and popular organization in and near your riding. With Canada's sovereignty, culture, even existence being attacked from our biggest trading partner, continuing to campaign against CBC was out of step.
CBC programming absolutely appalling? Not really, some is not that great, but public broadcasters like CBC will never have programming that will always mirror commercial broadcasters. They could and should be a bit more mainstream, however they do have shows that are reasonably popular with the public. CBC like all government funded broadcasters are always thought of as being too left wing, even radical.

We'll have to wait for Carney's first budget to come out to see if he follows through on the $150 million.
I asked a couple of people who work at CBC and both said they haven't heard anything about what it might be earmarked for and that it hasn't advanced past being a campaign trail promise yet. There were also some choice words about executive compensation and bonuses so that's apparently still a very touchy subject even with the old CEO out of there.

Often the politicians lose all recollection of their campaign promises within days after the election.

I wouldn't mind seeing Marketplace get enough funding for a full hour instead of 30 minutes.
It's a really good program.

Agreed. It is appointment PVRing for me and it is usually viewed within the next 24 hours.
