I'm more than a bit skeptical about how this can work, but a company maintains its has come up with an AI program that allows listeners to tune into any FM station and ensure they only hear music - and not the DJ or any ads.
Exactly what fills in the time between the breaks isn't clear but Auddia insists it can "transform" radio listening for its users. It also notes the feature can be turned off, to let anyone hear a station as normal. I'd love to check out a demo of this thing to see if it actually works as advertised.
What airs in the middle of a five minute commercial break? Silence? Some other music? There are a lot of questions.
"The new model, dubbed the “binary AI model” internally, can allow subscribers to turn off both ads and DJ talk. This transforms any FM music station into wall-to-wall, uninterrupted music listening.
The new feature, available only to subscribers of the faidr platform, will be accessible through a new set of radio preferences. Subscribers can change these settings whenever they choose, turning ads and DJ talk off and on at will."
Like the invention of the DVR that let TV viewers skip ads, if it works, it could be another blow to an already struggling radio industry.

I actually don’t mind listening to DJs, they’re a big part of the station’s branding. As for ads, well gotta pay the bills! I also think this will work only if you’re streaming radio and not OTA broadcasts.

How completely pointless.

If the audience wants to only hear the music and no announcer or commercials, they likely haven't been listening to a radio station for a while then.

I often see on this site comments about how annoying and poorly created many of the commercials are that are currently running on various Toronto radio stations. These creators could have learned a few things from Dick Orkin who was a master at developing humourous ads that did a tremendous job of reaching the sponsors intended audience. The Time Magazine spots are legendary.

I bought a subscription. I just need to know how the experience is.
It only has US stations, and the iHeart and Audacy stations are geo-blocked. Will report back.

I just want to know how it can possibly work. What goes on between the beginning of a stop set and when the music resumes? What does this thing replace it with? Does it just add another song in the mix? If so, how does it know how long it has to be?
I'll be very interested in your report.

It doesn't!
Took all of 5 minutes to figure out the trick.
I streamed Buffalo's Edge 103.3. When I toggled it to 'just music' mode, it started playing a generic Alternative Rock playlist. 3 of the first 7 songs offered (Yes, you can skip) aren't even on WEDG's regular playlist.
Lame.

So a gimmick. I was right to be skeptical. You might as well just stream some music list you like. Hope it wasn't too expensive to try!

$13 and the playlists aren't bad. I'll use it for the month I paid for

What else is new? Those American assholes will never allow their streams to be heard outside of the States because "tHiS Is AmErIcA" and Americans are disgusting, lying, narcissistic, selfish pigs. And don't get me started on their bullshit excuses about it being too expensive etc. to open up their streams worldwide. Yet another LIE from down south. If you're going to offer something online, offer it worldwide or don't offer it at all.
Do NOT EVER say you can't do something - THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS CAN'T - THAT WORD SHOULD NOT EXIST IN ANYBODY'S VOCABULARY!!!

A VPN solves this problem for Canadians that want to listen to American radio stations. Personally, I have found very few [Classic Rock] that are geo-blocked.

YOU ARE NOTHING BUT A GODDAMN AMERICAN PRICK!
Hey FP, while I appreciate your passion on this, can you please tone it down? In the first place, not all Americans are responsible for what the Orange Ogre does. And in the second case, I've been in touch with the author you referred to in this [now deleted] post and that book you referred to is available to Canadians via Amazon and other avenues.
The reason he was keeping it out of Canada was that it was partly self published and the high mailing costs made it too costly for him to pay the freight. That was years before Trump was even a factor.
I hate to be cliche, but some of my best friends are Americans, including my sister, who has lived in the NYC area since 1969. She is definitely not in favour of what's going on over there and fears for her family's future.
So I get your anger, but please remember - one horrendous man does not represent everybody. I appreciate your posts over the years, but please - if you're going to be angry do not wish AIDS and death on people. I know you're better than that. Thanks.

Yeah, that was pretty vile last night. Especially because the author in question is a dear friend and I know how much he would have been hurt by that if he'd seen it.
He makes nothing off his books, which are a labor of love. He's mostly out of the book business now anyway and focusing full-time on teaching. I understand he's a fantastic teacher.
And while I wouldn't do it now for that one particular noxious poster (who I'd have banned for that from any of my boards), if anyone else in Canada really wants those books, I can get them from Steve and ship them internationally through my web store.
As for the rest, I am a frequent visitor across the border and have every intention of continuing to be one as long as they don't take away my Nexus card. I spend a lot of my US dollars on Canadian products and tourism, very happily, and I'm not going to let one obnoxious leader (who didn't get my vote!) change that. I still love you guys, eh?

This new AI gimmick reminds me of something Eric Idle once posted on Twitter when it was still Twitter "I'm not afraid of artificial intelligence, I'm afraid of artificial stupidity."
