It's not often you see something on a TV drama that relates to actual radio, but on Wednesday's episode of "Chicago Med," there were two instances where real life broadcasting intersected with not-so-real fiction.
Without spoiling anything if you haven't seen it, the main plot surrounds a mother and young daughter trapped in a small well, unable to get out, with time ticking against them. News crews, including one from WMAQ-TV, the real Chicago NBC affiliate, show up to cover the dramatic rescue.
One scene contains a stand-up from a guy named Matthew Rodrigues, who is an actual Emmy award winning Windy City TV personality, co-hosting "Chicago Today" on Channel 5 there.
Later, the workers at the hospital are watching a monitor where a guy with a Channel 4 mic flash (there is no Channel 4 in Chicago) is doing a stand-up giving viewers the latest in the unfolding emergency. He's barely on screen for 10 secs. and then the camera pans away. Here's a glimpse of the scene:
The guy doing that update is none other than Bob Sirott, the famous WLS rock jock from the 1970s and the current morning show host on WGN-AM.
It was a blink-and-you'll-miss-it cameo and I didn't realize until the credits that it was him. But I used to listen to him in Toronto on the Big 89 and it was a weird flashback to my younger days to realize who that was.
One quibble. In the Rodrigues scene, he signs off and appears to throw back to the station just as rescue workers are trying to lift the victim out of the small hole. There is no way in the world they would do that, instead zooming in on the action to cover the dramatic life saving operation live. For the purposes of the show, I suppose it made sense. In real life, it would never, ever happen like that!
