This TV Show Will Celebrate An Astounding 10,000 Episodes On Feb. 26th

For most non-news shows, getting to about 100 episodes is the jackpot - that means you can go into syndication and make millions of dollars. Even those who exceed that number - The Simpsons has produced more than 780 shows so far, with more to come - can never hope to get to the magic 10-grand.

But when you're on every day and have been since 1972, it's easy to reach the milestone. Which is why on Feb. 26th, the venerable "Price Is Right" will celebrate its 10,000 episode. That is simply astounding, especially considering it has only ever had two hosts during its long daytime run - the late Bob Barker and the very much still here Drew Carey.

Love it or hate it, it is an incredible accomplishment and some of its signature hallmarks have become part of modern culture, including the phrase "Come on Down!" and the inevitable Fail Horn sound effect when someone loses. Not to mention its long unchanged theme from Score Productions, which has undoubtedly earned someone at that company millions from the constant play of that song. Is there anyone who didn't watch this thing when they were home sick from school?

There are now free streaming services that show nothing but "Price" 24 hours a day. and they rarely have to repeat an episode.

The show will be marking the milestone with special games all worth 10-grand on its ground-breaking broadcast and you have to wonder if it will still be around for its 20,000th. Most of us may not be, but if the lyrics to The Barenaked Ladies' "It's All Been Done," are any indication, the answer is yes.

"Alone and bored
On a 30th century night
Will I see you
On The Price Is Right?"

Given the current state of television, I doubt we will ever see anything quite like it again.

From Sept. 4, 1972, the first ever episode:

Here is that very first episode from 1972. Notice at the very beginning, the contestants chosen from the audience aren't told to "Come on Down" but simply to "Stand Up!"

TPIR consistently beats The View in its 11AM timeslot.

Those other two game shows didn't last long on the CBS daytime schedule. Joker's Wild aired until 1975, Gambit 1976.
