Some Odd Toronto Radio Memory Floggers

I came across some random samples of the glory days of CHUM and CFTR and thought they'd make a fun post going into a dreary weekend. I love the pose from Mike Cooper in the "Grease" shot from 1978, hamming it up for all he's worth. And was there really a "CHUM History of Rock & Roll" book that accompanied the show? Was it ever for sale in Canada? I'd like to get a look at one of those copies!

I don't think this was ever actually a real chart, but maybe Doug Thompson can say for sure. It was a congratulatory ad from Warner Music on CHUM's 40th anniversary in May 1997.

RA, I noticed the "Grease" photo from CFTR featured Jeff Newfield. I'm assuming that's the same Jeff Newfield that was later known as Scruff Connors. The photo is a bit grainy, but it looks like old Scruffer. I had no idea he worked at 'TR back in the 70s.

Re: Some Odd Toronto Radio Memory Floggers

Although there was no individual credit for this, I produced that 28 hour CHUM special in 1969. It took me several weeks, but I have to say, it was not my best work. The narrator Chuck Riley, flew in from Indianapolis (where he was a DJ) over several weekends. Larry Solway wrote it based on research by RPM's Walt Grealis. We had no time to research and include artist interview clips (although I managed to sneak it a couple that were not in the script).

The program got such rave response from CHUM listeners that it was repeated in early January 1970.

I don't know how many other stations aired this as the script had CHUM mentions throughout all 28 hours.

The story beneath that CHUM Limited ad refers to CHUM's Evolution of Rock, aired in 1976 and this was a masterpiece. It took 3 producers and a full year to produce. Written by former CHUM writer Bill McDonald and produced by CHUM's Zeke Zdebiak, Bob McMillan and Production Manager Warren Cosford. The EOR went on to win Billboard Magazine's "Best International Syndicated Special" in 1977.

It was also narrated by Chuck RIley, but this time Warren Cosford flew several times to Indianapolis to record him.

Both specials were commissioned by CHUM Program DIrector J. Robert Wood.

The Warner Music Canada CHUM chart was for a 40th anniversary edition in RPM magazine.

Thanks Ray! And welcome to the Big Yellow Board. Hope it's a long and happy stay. I'll be checking out those links shortly and I appreciate you putting them up.

As for Doug Thompson's post, are those specials online anywhere? Seems a shame that we're no longer able to hear them. Especially the later one. I remember listening to them both, but it's been so long, I can barely remember them!

The Evolution of Rock will soon be on line as part of the CHUM website chumtribute.com in association with Dale Patterson of Rock Radio Scrapbook.
