"New" Detroit Station Using Sexual Deviance To Promote Format Change
We've heard all the stunts a station uses to advertise a new format is coming. Playing the same song over and over. Weird liners about something special being on the way. Or even a sound effect like lake waves or a heartbeat for a certain number of days. But I have to admit, I haven't heard this one before.
A Detroit area AM radio station has been playing songs and liners about sexual deviance to attract attention that something different is pending. According to Radio Insight, WCXI-AM 1160 is about to go all oldies. But to publicize the swap, they've been playing to, let's say, a different kind of audience.
"The station is currently running a mix of songs about sexual deviance such as Rick James “Super Freak” and The Staple Sisters “Dirty Ol’ Man” mixed with news clips about Overcomer Ministry and Brother Ralph Stair’s sexual assault allegations as WCXI previously carried Stair’s sermons."
Quite a change for a station that was previously offering an all religious format!
The station, branded as Cool 1160, is moving to all oldies, running music from the 60s to the 2000s, quite the range. But getting there appears to be half the fun. You can hear the "come-ons" before the big debut here.

WCXI is actually licenced to Fenton. It is closer to Flint than Detroit. Their 400 watt night signal barely crosses the Canadian border according to Radio Locator.

I love what they're saying and doing...
"While other stations give you this...
(goes to a Bon Jovi song playing, then slowed down. Then a person says "That's the tenth time I've heard this song today...")
We give you this..." (goes to a sampling of a wide variety of classic hits)
"Go ahead, make us your number one pre set...we won't tell!"
They seem to be playing good music also.

Heard the stunting last night in North York around 9:30 p.m. on a portable radio. In addition to the newsclips about Brother Scare they also played Radiohead's "Creep", The Police's "Don't Stand So Close To Me" and Depeche Mode's "Personal Jesus" ....And a sound montage that lifted "September" from Earth Wind & Fire and "25" from Chicago's "25 or 6 to 4" to hint at the format change today.

This is the best stunt I can remember since The Pole in 2023, when MyBroadcasting was changing the format of its newly acquired WLYK-FM across the border. It ran for about three weeks and played nothing but hits you might hear in a strip club.
It got so much attention, some listeners were actually disappointed when the actual new format launched three weeks later!

Found WCXI on Tune-in. They played Summer by War. Despite having a number of top 10 hits the only one that gets any play on Corporate Radio is Lo Rider.

Yes, under their new format they promise to play songs no one else does anymore. May be worth a bookmark for fans of that era.

Found WCXI on Tune-in. They played Summer by War. Despite having a number of top 10 hits the only one that gets any play on Corporate Radio is Lo Rider.
I’ve also heard “Spill the Wine” and “Why Can’t We Be Friends” recently, plus “Cisco Kid” a couple of times, so someone is playing other hits by War on their stations. I agree though, Lo Rider is their big one for airplay.

Tuned in yesterday around noon. They have a weak but listenable signal around Grand Bend assuming there is low background noise. It is nice to hear music on AM. They appear to be automated.
