Does AM640's Ben Mulroney Actually Only Work Part-time?

I'm coming to that conclusion. We've noted here before how he's often off, with someone subbing for him. Last week, he got Labour Day off and then was gone again on Friday.

He announced at the end of his show on Monday afternoon that he'd be in the next day - but has Wednesday, Thursday and Friday off this week.

I would love to see what his deal is. I'm not sure he's worked a full five-day week in months. It's very odd when you're trying to get people used to your presence and establish a regular audience.

No word yet on who will be taking his place, but 640's line-up of late has been very piecemeal. It's my understanding that Rob Fai is in Japan covering baseball, so it likely won't be him. You've got Drex on the afternoon show and Rick Ralph in the mid-mornings. Who is left?

He's very important. He has many things to do.

Just kidding he's a loser.

One theory of mine is:

1) Let's assume he's registered as his own sole-person company (similar to the way John Oakley did it) and then invoicing Corus (C2C - "Company to Company") for his services/time. Peter Shurman had a similar arrangement for fill-in work, I believe.

2) Thus, he doesn't work the hours, and he's not billing. He's then saving Corus money, so they're okay with it - even "encouraging" it? Instead, those either on fulltime staff/payroll anyway do a fill-in shift (Drolet? At least previously), or are invoicing also (or paid "overtime" - the Drex scenario? Or is he doing it after his Edge shift just because he loves/misses talk radio?) but at surely a lower rate than the "brand name recognition" of Mulroney in whatever he negotiated.

Additional theory: Perhaps the idea was that the Mulroney hire was a big "marquee" name and it's enough that it drives some ears to the station and appears in ads, billboards, or wherever else and doesn't even matter that he's not there full-time. Not exactly a "loss leader", but serving its purpose all the same whether he's part-time or full-time.

Re: Does AM640's Ben Mulroney Actually Only Work Part-time?

I actually like his show most of the time and love him or hate him, he's a promotable name. But you can't build an audience on a week-to-week basis if you're never on consistently.

When you say part-time, does that account for prep time and other work by the host? What might that constitute?

Ben is far from a loser.

Re: Does AM640's Ben Mulroney Actually Only Work Part-time?

And now it appears that Greg Brady has Wednesday off. It's just one day and everyone's entitled to time away, but that means the station's morning man and its afternoon personality will both be gone at the same time, they have a confusing mid-day line-up and nothing new after 7 PM. And it's only a week after Labour Day.

It speaks volumes about what's going on over there, and it will be really interesting to see who takes Brady's place. It's not exactly a full bullpen.

Another person at Corus who has substantial time off is Senior National Affairs Correspondent Eric Sorenson. It can seemingly go months without seeing him.

And tangentially, despite Global News staff reductions over the past years, they maintained a National Health Reporter and a Senior Business Correspondent, and now hired a Senior Business Editor (Jaqueline Hansen) who also anchors Global National.

Re: Does AM640's Ben Mulroney Actually Only Work Part-time?

I am always amazed why the on air schedules of a very low rated radio station like AM640 comes up so much on here.  Why all the hand wringing about who might cover what show is kind of funny. And the constant reminders of what financial trouble Corus is in....my my..what will they do??

In terms of Mulroney, what he makes with his show on AM640 is likely pocket change.  Same with John Tory on Newstalk 1010.  Like them or not these two people have a lot more going on and make their real money in other ventures.  The radio shows are more like a hobby for them, and keeps them in the public eye.

Re: Does AM640's Ben Mulroney Actually Only Work Part-time?

Exactly
Ben is just having fun.
Brought up into wealth and connections I'm sure he will never want for some plum job.
Not to mention the money he made doing years of prime time TV
He is not your average working family man.

Those stations come up here is generally because many posters listen to the talk stations and like to discuss what they are - or aren't - doing. It's not a concentration on 640 per se. It's just that people can only comment on what they hear.

I don't listen to Indie 88.1 for example. So I have no idea what goes on over there. And even if I did, what would those posts be? They've just added the latest single by [insert artist name] here? Frankly, 640, 680, Radio 1 and 1010 get mentioned here a lot because as mostly non-music stations, there's simply a lot more to talk about than those outlets that just spin records all day.

The talk line-up is almost entirely based on personality, and while the music outlets have some talented people, all of them could be replaced tomorrow by automation and sadly, most listeners would probably never even notice.  So the talk stations get inordinate attention simply because, for better or worse, they generally make the most news and there's more to discuss about them.

That said, I welcome any other station topics that peple might want to comment on here. I'd love to hear more about CHFI, CHUM-FM, Virgin 99.9 and the like. There's just not that much to say about them because they're consistent and thus the same thing almost every day.

Re: Does AM640's Ben Mulroney Actually Only Work Part-time?

Well, fine to post about what was talked about on a show or if a topic is interesting or different.  But why the constant angst about Mulroney or Brady missing another Friday show, or be away next week, or if they are part-time.  And then speculating if the host filling in will be from Calgary or Toronto, and who could it be??   After all, Corus is in trouble and don't have many on air people left to fill in, don't ya know....

Re: Does AM640's Ben Mulroney Actually Only Work Part-time?

This post has almost 500 page views as of this writing, which means someone is interested in it. If you're not (and you must have been at least in some limited way, because you've obviously read it and responded to it) then you can skip it. That's the great thing about the board. You're not required to read anything that doesn't interest you. I'm not sure why you don't want others to talk about subjects that you're not a fan of.

I say to each his own. Some people will find this of note, others won't. If you're an "other," that's fine. But what's with the sarcastic comments about a topic many here obviously think is worth some attention?

And by the way, there is something to be said about Corus' ongoing precarious financial position. You think a Canadian broadcaster that has so many radio and TV stations in this country and may be teetering on the edge of bankruptcy is an unimportant topic? I suspect you're in the minority.

If Corus goes bust, AM640 may not be the only thing that disappears from the local dial. It's not likely but Q107 and Edge 102.1 as we know them could also go down the drain with it. That's not a small story. You're welcome to ignore this thread from here on in, but it won't stop others from commenting.

Re: Does AM640's Ben Mulroney Actually Only Work Part-time?

We have no idea how many of the 500 page views are because of the topic or the spirited debate!

Endless speculation on why an announcer on a bottom rated radio station is taking a day off or might be part-time is not exactly riveting for most I bet. Especially since you bring this up all the time.  Almost as exciting as complaining about a day that was not as sunny as the forecast predicted on CTV Toronto.  Me thinks some people take themselves and a few not very important topics way too serious...

Oh, I think the situation with Corus is serious however and would be a shame if the company went under.  When exactly did I say it was unimportant?  I just think the "death watch" attitude you have about them is pretty lame and overdone..

Re: Does AM640's Ben Mulroney Actually Only Work Part-time?

Amazing. So more than 500 page views (600 now) were just accessed by totally uninterested people. Why would they do that?

What world do you live in? The fact you also looked at it and even responded to it shows you're something of a hypocrite.

I repeat what I said before - if you're not interested in this thread, don't look at it. Don't comment on it. Just ignore it. Why are there always killjoys who want to ruin what other people might like? There are plenty of other subjects here you can hate on if you want. Or you can not come here at all if it bugs you so much.

As for me, I'm going to continue to monitor this story because it affects a Toronto radio station. You know, the very thing the SOWNY Board is supposed to be about.

Turns out the substitute host for Brady is Scott Radley. He may not be a well known name to listeners here, but some in Hamilton will remember him. He used to do a show on CHML. He also is a columnist for the Hamilton Spectator and does fill-in work for AM980 in London.

A voice I'd not heard before this morning.

I noticed a few bad habits on-air, but it's a new environment.

1) Some loud coughing and then apologizing to the caller for it. No reach for a cough/mute button.

2) He went at least 15, maybe even 20 minutes, without identifying himself at all. No idea who I was listening to for what seemed like an eternity when I tuned in - "Who's that voice?". That only was resolved with a liner after the 7:30 break mentioning Greg Brady and then Scott indicated who he was. Even the callers seemed unsure, saying "Hey, how you doin'?" without greeting by any name.

Re: Does AM640's Ben Mulroney Actually Only Work Part-time?

I guess I am one of those "Other" people. I don't listen to AM640. I am basically unfamiliar with their lineup of shows. Yes I am familiar with Ben Mulroney. Not from AM640 but from his television work. So why would I read a discussion about a station to which I never listen? [Proper grammar is important] Because I am interested in radio, the business of radio, the ratings, the format changes, the comings and goings of the on air staff. I am a radio geek. Always have been. always will be. Unlike most here, I have never actually worked in radio, so technically I am a bit of an outsider. Oh I wanted to get into radio. However, my marks weren't good enough to get into Ryerson, which at the time, was the only school offering broadcast courses. Looking at the state of the broadcast industry now, I am sort of glad I went in another direction. But my love for radio will always be there.

Re: Does AM640's Ben Mulroney Actually Only Work Part-time?

Unfortunately I see Ben who’s a staunch supporter of Zionist Apartheid Israel; as a supporter of Genocide.  Anyone who defends this and uses a broadcast platform to ‘normalize’ genocide and the killing of children should not be on the air anywhere imo.

Re: Does AM640's Ben Mulroney Actually Only Work Part-time?

I fully understand the sensitivity of this issue, but I would very much like to leave it off this board. I think I've mentioned that to this poster before. It is a serious issue but has nothing to do with local TV and radio. So please take it elsewhere.

It is literally a no win topic. Thanks.

Re: Does AM640's Ben Mulroney Actually Only Work Part-time?

I rarely listen to 640, but was a big fan of CHML.....Bill Kelly, and Scott Radley

CHML did a great job covering the story of the killers of Laura Babcock and Tim Bosma....
I often listened to it for a change from 1010...........
I think any closures of Corus stations is bad for the radio industry....

Unfortunately, as I mentioned in an earlier post,  CFPL is now in a similar position to the late  CJBK, with just having a local morning host.  I listened to CFPL 980 when they played music  (this would be in the late 70s and early 80s)
As they say, we'll stay  tuned

Re: Does AM640's Ben Mulroney Actually Only Work Part-time?

I don't recognize the voice doing the noon shift on AM640 Wednesday. I think his name is Tim Parent and if that's true, he appears to be yet another former Corus employee based in Calgary.

LinkedIn indicates he had a show on a Corus Calgary station for about 2 years and has been a freelancer since then.

Ironic in a way that with so few people left to fill time on their Toronto talk station, they're turning to former employees to fill the gap.

Still, it's better than the rerun of The Last Show that had been in that time slot. At least this program is new.
