Howard Stern Trolls Listeners & Returns To SiriusXM

After weeks of speculation, the results are in - Howard Stern's time on SiriusXM has come to an end.

Stern was once the main attraction on the satellite radio pay service, and was said to be responsible for thousands of listener sign-ups. But at 71 and with a multi-million dollar contract, the company and Stern could obviously not agree on a new deal, ending an era in radio.

Stern was replaced Monday by Andy Cohen.

“I know you’re expecting a big announcement from Howard, and this is not how things were meant to go,” Cohen said. “This was supposed to be a cleaner hand off — I’m kind of winging it,” he continued, saying that it has been a “surreal morning here.”

Added Cohen, “I can’t possibly fill his void” and said he was confident Stern would land on another platform soon."

Not so fast... this from CNN...

Howard Stern pranked his fans and the media about leaving his longtime SiriusXM radio show on Monday.Bravo host Andy Cohen appeared at the top of Stern’s 7 am time slot, announcing that he was taking over the channel and rebranding it as “Andy 100.” Multiple media outlets published reports that he was leaving the radio network. However, Stern came back on air about 10 minutes later announcing that it was a hoax. The prank comes as his future with SiriusXM remains unclear. Stern had previously said he would address his future on Monday.

Re: Howard Stern Trolls Listeners & Returns To SiriusXM

I actually wondered about this, but when it appeared in a credible publication like Variety, I thought it could be true. My original guess a few weeks ago was that he would return, but perhaps with a reduced schedule. I guess we'll see.

I've never been a fan of Stern and never listened to him when he was on Q or WBUF back in the day. But I'll give him this - he successfully fooled a lot of news organizations, including the Associated Press.

From the AP (updated):

Unexpectedly, Stern has actually become a good interviewer in recent years and no longer tries to humiliate his guests.

Despite his return, he does not have a new contract. They're still talking about it. So we may not be at the end of this sordid little negotiation yet.

Did you know that Howard Stern and Rush Limbaugh shared the same birthday? January 12th. Limbaugh 1951. Stern 1954.

While many were speculating on the future - or lack of one - for Howard Stern, Page Six reports that his staffers were not let in on the joke. And with contract negotiations still ongoing, there's apparently a lot of fear for those who toil for the King Of All Media.

Thanks to non-disclosure agreements, they're not allowed to talk about what's going on. But many are in fear of losing their jobs, even with Stern back on the air - for now.

Doesn't he only do three live shows per week ?

Re: Howard Stern Trolls Listeners & Returns To SiriusXM

He says his new deal gives him the freedom to take time off when needed, so I wonder if even three days a week will be generous!

“I’m happy to announce that I’ve figured out a way to have it all,” Stern told his listeners. “More free time, and continuing to be on the radio. So yes, we are coming back for three years.”

Expect a lot of absences or reruns.
