There's A New Music Video Service On Ch. 29 You Probably Can't See

It's called "ROXi" and it's a new service provided by owner Sinclair. It's a free over-the-air music video channel that allows users to instantly request their favourite song on demand, with no membership, sign-up or password required. Think a YouTube/MTV hybrid on your living room screen, along with apps.

The station launched this week in select cities across the U.S., including Channel 29 in Buffalo. It certainly sounds promising.

"Consumers tuning into the ROXi TV channel will discover interactive features previously unavailable on broadcast television. Viewers can skip through music videos TikTok style - or search for any artist, song, mood, or genre - all instantly, with their TV remote from ROXi’s catalogue of 100 million licensed songs, in partnerships with Universal Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment, Warner Music Group, and MERLIN. The comprehensive catalogue is comprised of both original music videos and virtual music videos."

But there's a catch - to see it, you have to have a so-called "Next GenTV," the ATSC 3.0 upgrade that has been slow to spread among set owners. Some station groups have been pushing for a forced nationwide adoption of the new standard, which allows for interactivity - but could also prevent you from recording shows you watch and force more ads on you.

If you have a NextGen equipped set, you can see the newcomer on 29.21, wherever that is. If not, it's back to YouTube.

If I was still part of the OTA crowd, I would choose the option of PVRing my shows over viewing music videos.

Curious: Is anyone with a 3.0 tuner in the GTA still able to decode video from the WNYO-DT16 stream?

These "because we can" things with ATSC 3.0 are at least amusing.

"It's like Youtube, but you need a new TV!"

Let us know how it works if you can get it. I know I'd be interested in finding out about it, although it's not a channel I'd normally watch. I'm more curious about its interactivity, which is NextGen's big selling point.

The interactive features require an internet connection, as if the whole thing wasn't already redundant enough.

On Sony TVs I believe you need to set your location to USA manually to activate the ASTC 3.0 tuner for station scanning.

Yes, you are correct.  I have tuned them in before.  Problem is the signals are weak for me and I can't get them all the time.

My HD Homerun supports ATSC 3.0.  It shows channel 29 as 129.1 (The atsc 3.0 versions of 2, 4, 7, 29 & 49 have 100 added to their channel number. I'll have to check and see if i can get this new channel.
