Would this be a reliable assumption of Detroit FM regular reception in SW Ontario. As far north as Sarnia and as far east as Chatham, I suspect WOMC's 190,000 watt signal might go much further.

Might depend on factors such as terrain, other neighbouring 104.3 stations, day to day conditions. And also on the condition of the transmitter, it's height. I'd expect it to be at least semi-regular in, say, London. In north Kawarthas, it's in and out, more often not in than in, but I think if I cared enough I could conjure it up on any given day and possibly within the hour. 102.7 is one of my most open channels, and lately I record a lot there for meteor scatter. The K-Love Detroit usually doesn't stay absent for more than an hour. Despite power differences I would equate the two as very roughly comparable. Same with 97.9 WJLB.
Speaking of 102.7, I finally pulled in CJFB Bolton. It wasn't easy but a few days ago I reviewed a recording of something that IDed on the channel but was having trouble. With fresh ears, I was able to make out the word Bolton after 'FM 102'. It was alone on the channel. The reception was JUNE 8. I actually thought it would be CHOP Newmarket, which recently increased to 100 watts. I've heard that one here a couple times, and East FM in Scarborough is a regular here. But I was beginning to wonder if Bolton might be too elusive. Anyhow, two IDs, by the same announcer as the one I found online, and the exact same ID. Nondescript pop music of some kind. I also hear Jon Pole's Kingston-market station in NY State from time to time, and also a French station from Val d'Or QC.
104.3 would be Sault Ste Marie, Detroit, Utica, Val d'Or (yes, on both channels), Kingston - somewhat in that order.

Since CHUM FM went HD the DX opportunity for 104.3 is pretty much dead in Toronto and that's the same for much of the FM dial since the last HD expansion. Not sure of the impact of a strong tropo or E-Skip on HD adjacent channel obliteration. Each strong HD signal takes out two adjacent frequencies.
Two days a ago I was able to pull in very faintly and briefly, Windsor 93.9 and oddly a bit later 93.9 from Ottawa.

Here in London we get occasional FM from Detroit but, you're right. It isn't reliable.
Oddly, when I lived up on the Bruce Peninsula, we got more reception from Detroit than we do down here.

Could be the Lake Huron water path. I remember when I was in California in 1986, while driving up the coastal highway to San Francisco, once I reached Santa Barbara most of the San Diego FM's were loud and clear. They lasted for the next hour or so until the highway turned back inland. Poof! They were gone.

Some unusual tropo patterns today. Getting lots of stations where other less distant stations are regulars.
88.5 -Got WRUR Triple A Rochester
88.5 - Also The Lake Grimsby
92.5 Received WBEE HD1 and HD2 seemed to take over local Kiss 92.5, HD hijack. This lasted a long time.
93.3 - usually My FM was brining in Fickle FM from NY state
101.3 - usually a weaker ethnic HD was brining in WARM 101.3 from Rochester
93.1 - usually CHAY had 93Q from Syracuse
103.9 - usually CBC FM had WBKX Rochester
WBEE signal had RDS see pic and audio clip below:

WDKX on 103.9? Impressive. I think they transmit only 800 watts. When I lived in Oakville, they were a regular tropo catch, until CBC Peterboro arrived.

The central NY directed pattern is still on. I am still getting WBEE HD right now. That's amazing given the HD impacts on DX'ing. I also got a very clear French station on 90.7 perhaps Radio Canada from Ottawa. Also K-Love may be off as I was getting Mix 102.5 from Utica/Rome very clearly and also a French station which was less clear.

You heard CBOF-FM Ottawa (more or less //CJBC 90.3). Where are you that you're getting WBEE?

I am in west Pickering near the scar border and still very surprised that WBEE over took Kiss 92.5. The pattern seems to be fading but last time I checked K-Love was still out and I got a French station on that as well.

French on 102.5 is likely CBOX Ottawa.

From north Kawartha, conditions out to 150 miles or so are very strong. Bracebridge 99.5 taken out by Kitchener-Buffalo (and two days ago by Detroit). 107.7 has a 49-watt CBC repeater in Britt ON (not far from North Bay). CKLP 103.3 is very strong and pushing fully through IBOC sideband from 103.5 CIDC.
Offline
I was heading over to 401/Port Union Road that morning and CISS 92.5 became unlistenable due to WBEE. Also heard WTSS 96.1 and WCMF 96.5 over the very strong HD sidebands of 96.3. Also noted CHAY was quite impaired, though I've experienced this before in that area.
Offline
More Tropo today. Once again Syracuse/Rochester orientated. HD sideband beater. Getting WCMF 96.5 very clear. WBEE was coming in again at 92.5. Received WOUR at 96.9 when I nulled Buffalo 97 rock,. 102.9 was religious. 103.5 country station from Rochester. Received the translators for WXRL Buffalo Classic country and WYSL Rochester at 95.5.
One mystery at 101.9 I got a ID for Richmond Independent radio from Virginia but that is a low power FM at 97.3 and they don't have a repeater at 101.9 and so I am mystified at what I received. Came in for about 15 minutes.
Offline
The 101.9 is especially puzzling because Richmond has a translator on 101.7 and a full-power on 102.1 - direct adjacents. maybe it was a reference to Richmond Independent Radio? What exactly did you hear? Did you record any of this? No tropo noted down that way this morning by anyone in the area that I know of, though there have been faint hints of E-skip below FM and a surge could have happened.
Your 102.9 likely Syracuse, 103.5 sounds like Sodus NY.

I did record and will digitize and post. Was rather distorted but I believe they ID'd it twice as Richmond Independent Radio which is a LP designated station at 97.3 and operates at 48 watts. Perhaps another station was running a program from the station and left the ID in.

That can happen; I've seen that. Happy to review a recording. You can either post in somewhere or PM me for my address.

Here is the clip.
1. Richmond Independent Radio - 101.9
2. Kissin Oldie WKZA 106.9 in Southwest NY near the Penn border
3. Richmond Independent Radio again
4. Translator for WXRL Classic Country 95.5
5. WCMF 96.5 overriding the HD sideband of 96.3
6. HD3 of 100.5 Rochester overriding the HD sideband of CHIN
7. WOUR 96.9 - The Rock of Central NY same frequency as 97 Rock Buffalo
8. 102.9 Religious WMHR - same frequency as the Legend Hamilton
I looked at the schedule of Richmond Independent Radio and it does not match what I heard around 8:30 AM. Also the program announced for 9 AM is not on the schedule at all on any day.
Also Saul maybe you can solve this other mystery, on 87.9 I usually get a very fuzzy sounding repeat of CHFI- like a very distorted adjacent channel splatter but during the last two tropos I was getting FOX Sports radio ???

The translator for WXRL 95.5 has a fringe range of only around Lockport N.Y.

From Scarborough Bluffs I have heard two Rochester-area translators on 95.5 W238DE in Spencerport (relays 1040 WYSL in Avon) and W238AB Rochester (heard three times, but now off-air, used to relay WNRV 95.1 Rochester). W238DD Lancaster is unheard for me and goes into my target list. Lancaster is near Buffalo. And there's also W238DG Canadaigua, which relays WOKR 1310. All are 250 watts and in the general Rochester and Buffalo areas, and while they do just cover and serve their licenced communities they can and do get out. If I wasn't settled into my Kawartha location right now I'd be at the Bluffs chasing the likes of these.

Saul now that I have posted the clip any idea about 101.9. The station is not only ID'd but they play a promo for another show on the station as well. Also my new question about Fox Sports radio....Thanks

That's just too weird. Signal is solid. I'll go on a limb here and wonder if it's CFRC Kingston.
Ashley and Brad Kissin Oldies is WKZA Jamestown NY 106.9 as you've noted. Nice signals between that and the translators. You might tune into CFRC's stream at the same time either any day or the same day of the week you heard this (Saturday).
If you want to isolate stations into individual clips, I like Audacity. I also put date and time into my MP3 labels. Example: 98.3 CFLY ON Kingston Tr 16AG25 0945.mp3

I think there was tropo most of the day on Saturday. I saw WBBZ 67 again that morning. Some notables:
- CING-FM 95.3 HD sidebands were off Saturday night and remain so today. Was able to hear Rochester 95.1 here in Toronto. HD sidebands are still off as of time of writing.
- CFXJ-FM 93.5 has it's auxillary transmitter on in parallel with the main on FCP. I was trying to listen to it last night in the car while driving in North York and the audio was unlistenable. The two signals are not synchronous and are out by close to 10 seconds. It's still like this as of 9:30am Sunday. Their AX looks to be located at 2 St Clair W. Will be interesting to see how long this goes on for.
- Saturday night, CFXJ's HD sidebands were either off or at reduced power. I was hearing hispanic music on 93.3 on my clock radio before bed. I was guessing it was likely CFMU Hamilton, but when it ID'd it said "Today's SE 93". It's been quite a while since I've heard this Jamestown station, but I used to hear quite often here back in the 70's and 80's when the band was less crowded.

Didn't 93.5 CFXJ once apply for some rebroadcasters on the same channel? I vaguely recall something... If so, was there ever an outcome?

Oof.

Still getting the delayed signal here as of 5pm. If I move my portable 2 feet, I can listen to the exact same material they played seconds ago. Their aux is a bit closer to me than FCP. The station is also very distorted on my living room stereo, where it normally is clear. I saw this same problem with some other Toronto stations back in June 2024, when the CN Tower master antenna was replaced and some had both main and backup's running. CHUM-FM was one.
Saul: Correct and the application was denied as mentioned. That type of repeater would need to be synchronous to the main one and requires GPS timing to keep the carriers in phase and of course, the audio has to be in perfect sync. It's all looks great in theory but in practice it's a crap shoot, due to multipath effects in some areas that creates more distortion. Thinking KX-96.

Thanks RadioAaron and Evuguy.
The repeater for KX 96 has always struck me as textbook. Years of DXing and I've never been able to 'hear' them apart. I've only logged both in Toronto because the Toronto repeater came along later and I'm presuming it's what I hear downtown. I believe an engineer named Gus (lost on a last name) helped architect that beauty!
