Corus says the west coast's news/talk leader will move to the frequency vacated when they closed the former all traffic station.
CKNW on the move.

Never heard either of these. I would imagine Corus owns both channels and the CRTC hasn't yet officially deleted 730. (Just as CHML wasn't officially deleted until just a few days ago). A London ON DXer managed to hear 730 a few years ago, so maybe... 1040 would also have been a good channel, but the station there was owned by Bell. That one made it out here often enough. I would imagine all Corus needed, given the time lapse, was the go-ahead from Industry Canada?

730 and 980 are still both on-air, simulcasting. 980 will be shut down.

That was so not on my radar. Thank you for clarifying!

I am not overly familiar with the Vancouver market, but would these two stations be similar to CFRB and CHUM here? CKNW the full service MOR station While CKLG was the monster Top 40 teen station. 980 eventually morphed into a NT format as did RB. 730 went through a variety of unsuccessful formats as did CHUM. While 1050 has stuck with it's low rated sports format. I doubt the 730 traffic format in Vancouver does well either. With CKNW moving to 730 and 980 going silent, wouldn't that be similar to CFRB moving to 1050 and 1010 going dark?

Comparisons are correct.
The traffic format mostly did what it was intended to: protect CKNW from News1130. To continue with your comparison, it would be like Bell running all-traffic on 1050 to keep 1010 listeners from going to 680 for a quick traffic hit.

I sat in the transmitter hut in Delta for the first 24 hours on and off of 'full power' for 1040. The signal is a crazy powerhouse. 50lk Day & Night. We got calls and cards from all over the place, including the Azores. When the transmitter was off, WHO in Iowa came crashing in.
When I first got the chance to turn on the mic. I knew it was something special. It really did put the 'broad' in broadcasting. I did a ''call us collect' just let the operator say where you're calling from and I won't accept the call bit, and we had calls from all over Canada & the US.
It was a great, fun place to be while it lasted.

This same exact scenario played out with Corus' Edmonton cluster last fall when CHED moved from their longtime home on 630 AM to 880 where their all-news station (Global News Radio 880) used to be on.
Both stations swapped call signs (CHED to 880, and CHQT to 630). 630 played a loop of announcements telling people to tune in to 880 for CHED programming for a month before engineers finally turned off the 630 transmitter.

AM is dead.
Most electric cars for one don't even have it as it doesn't make cost effective sense to shield them from interference from the motors.
1050chum TSN would do a lot better if it were on FM in Toronto/GTA. Years ago ESPN bought WRKS 98.7(R&B) NYC to make it sports on FM.
