Is City/Omni actually moving or is this a rumour?
City TV and Omni are definitely moving. Their lease is up at the end of March, but I was wrong about the space being open to Corus moving in.
The current City/Omni building will become a Ryerson Toronto Metropolitan University building with Rogers giving them some support.
City/Omni's new home will be 1 Mount Pleasant.

Word is that the Kitchener stations will move to Guelph and operate out of those studios. 95.3 is already running from Toronto as none of the shows are broadcast locally. Y108 is going to move into the Guelph studios but they only have one host that broadcasts from within the studio anyways. Everything else is broadcast from elsewhere. These changes should all be happening early 2025
I don't see any regulation that dictates where a radio station must broadcast from 24/7, just that each station must serve their location of licence.
Therefore, as I mentioned, the smart thing to do is carry on with their new plans, but also send a body or two live on location for a special event in Hamilton (for Y 108 & 95.3) just to show support for their broadcast licence.
This way, it silences the CRTC, preventing them from complaining that communities are not being properly served.
(it helps also, if Y 108 continues to identify themselves as "Y108 Hamilton" regardless of where they are truly broadcasting from.)

Well gee, if 103.5 can operate just outside of Kipling station and somehow serve Orangeville, then I guess Corus is just taking notes from Evanov group then. They can operate from Toronto offices, but 95.3 still has an obligation to serve Hamilton in licence. Same with 107.9.
The CRTC doesn't care where they broadcast from, just who they serve in their broadcast licence.
Heck, Y108 can still go live on location in Hamilton for something and that would be (some) proof that Hamilton is not being ignored.

Strictly a guess, but maybe his father is finally retiring and he can take on those rolls, returning to the Evanov group?

SOWNY » When Does "Law & Order: Toronto" Return On City TV? » December 18, 2024 12:43 pm |
It is to my understanding that City just figured everybody would watch straight through on City and not bother with taking advantage of the fact that NBC was not sim subbed @ 8PM.
In order to to this, one has to record something and watch it later.
Too much effort, just to see American commercials.

Rogers, be proud of being canadian! not just with hockey.
Unfortunately, Rogers is a business first before it can be anything else.
Sadly, a sim sub still somehow brings in large amounts of money in 2024/2025.
It amazes me that it still does, even though many have abandoned cable in favour of their antenna, which, in some areas DOES pick up some American stations without a sim sub in place.
Then you have the IPTV replacements for Cable. Legal or not, they do allow the ability to watch American channels without a sim sub.
With all these alternatives to cable, it amazes me that Rogers isn't trying harder to think Canadian, with more Canadian content and less sim subbing.

It's different markets, so there's very little or no confusion, plus also CK FM has to identify themselves legally as CKLJ FM, when required to do so.

SOWNY » What are some songs you don't hear on the radio as often any more » December 16, 2024 10:39 am |
Back in the early 90's Mix 999 used to have a feature called
"In search of the lost classic", where a lost classic was played once every couple of hours, (or maybe less?)
Songs that never really seem to get any radio play anymore.
One song that really stood out in my mind the best was from the 70's.
On the radio, I'd love to hear Dave Edmund's song I hear you knocking. (but you can't come in)
However, if there could be a Mix today, then I don't really blame them for being in search of lost classics from only 20 years ago, since it was 20 years ago from the early 90's that that song was originally released.
It would be interesting if Boom 97.3 could do something like this, perhaps with their "lost" 90's classics?
It's more than 20 years ago, but it fits the format...

Any year that had a song with TWO (different sounding) versions.
How about 1998?
Pluto's The Good Bye Girl had a rock version, which was played on Kiss 92,
while Energy 108 would play the "Pop goes the girl" version, a great dance mix.

This is good. For the longest time there was no link. Now there is.
Big 820 is also on their CINA app.
I agree, I wouldn't mind having a classic (or variety) Country station to go to from time to time.
That would be nice.
However, we do live in a multicultural society, so if there's more money in Punjabi, then so be it!

Telus should put an ad out listing all the companies that used to be an alternitive, but are now owned by Rogers or Bell.
Distributel bought Primus, but Bell snatched up Distributel.
(to name one example...)
Tek Savvy is renting from Rogers and Bell, so they don't count as a competing source.
Any way one puts it, Canada's only internet company is Robelus and there's NOTHING anybody can do about it!

Until they break up the Rogers-Bell-Telus cabal, nothing will change because it won't have to.
RA, it is with great sadness that I report that the American side of the deal is not any prettier than the Canadian side.
It just looks that way. Yes, rates are better, etc, but choice isn't (and is gradually, and quietly driving prices up there too!)
Long story short, Mint Mobile was sold to T mobile...the rest of the story is a lot like what happened here with
Microcell, the original founder of Fido, now a property of Rogers.
T Mobile bought Sprint, and now they are buying US Cellular: ,and%20fourth%2Dlargest%20wireless%20carriers.
Also, Cricket wireless was sold to AT&T. The choices are shrinking in the States also...
(long story short, using Cricket in the States today, would be like using Fido instead of Rogers in Canada today...)

+ Radio is just reinventing itself
(well I guess going from vitality to death IS a state of change)
And gawd forbid if you EVER say anything against the tide of popular opinion there. Get ready for tar and feathers. Yikes! I've never understood how, if you say anything negative about radio on a radio forum, that equates to trolling. To me, that's a dose of reality. Plain and simple. It was what helped me decide to leave the business. Trust me, there is a quality of life, happiness and money outside of radio. One starts to realize that having such a deep passion for a career choice can be like a really bad addiction. Like an addiction, the medium does not love you back. But if you say something like that on a radio Facebok group, good night. There should be room for negative AND positive points to be made for the medium.
I don't know ... when I contemplate that we're in a world where CHML doesn't even exist, and stations like Bounce (which we listen to at work) has daily repetition so severe, it's worse than the stomach repeats you get from eating baked beans, you know the medium is well past its best before date.
Don't forget "One voice, one choice" radio. That's also the new norm.
