SOWNY » We are Canadians, not Americans » January 31, 2025 1:25 pm |
Our foreign policy says otherwise. It's as if we have no sovereignty. The Americans ask us to jump and we say 'How High'? They ask us to arrest someone on their behalf which has nothing to do with Canada and we do it at YVR (Huawei). They start and go to war and ask us to join them and our government says 'Okay, how many soldiers, equipment and where do we send the billions'?
Our Re'g'arded politicians speak so fondly about our great friendly neighbor to the south and put up shiny blue signs at the border crossings saying 'Ontario, open for business' all the while the Americans could care less about us except when they need or want something.
The USA is and has been a giant military complex entity which is more of a danger than a friend to countries like Canada and Mexico.
Since the 70's it's been considered that one day, USA expansionism will take aim at Canada and one of the easiest ways to acquire it is by weaking us economically to the point where it's beneficial to just be absorbed.
Imagine the possibilities once the tariffs get into full play and we counter with the same on things like steel, lumber, energy and of course Maple Syrup. Hope y'all have investments in USD because the CAD will drop further.

Politicians lie all the time.
Almost ALL do.
I'm wondering why the focus on Trump then?
Can someone name three examples of terrible lies he's said publicly?
As for reporters and their agencies/media outlets reporting fair and neutrally; I can think of a current affair where almost none are reporting fairly on the Israel/Palestine Conflict in Gaza. Whenever Israel murders civilians in Gaza (likely 50 to 100k by the time counting is done), the term 'Palestinians died' is used as if they passed away from unlucky or natural causes. When freedom fighters from Hamas (under apartheid) broke out on Oct 7th and murdered local israeli civilians, the term 'Killed' is used. Daily headlines like this are monitored and pointed out almost daily recently and regularly for the past two decades under apartheid rule. It could be that the reporters are using their own bias in the reporting terms, or it could be more nefarious where there are financial backings to various media from certain special interest groups. That said, anytime I hear someone suggesting that reporters and the media are fair and neutral; I can't relate. Previous to the current conflict in Gaza, there was similar style reporting in Afghanistan and Iraq where civilians would have 'died' while our soldiers were killed during our invasion into their countries.

I don't think Donald Trump is the big bad guy everyone on the 'Left' thinks he is.
He's more like a useful idiot for the party and it's policies since he's so popular.
He also partnered with RFK to set up a commission to study (and fix) america's health problem including childhood diabetes and autism rates.

"=12pxDonald Trump, who famously branded any story that even remotely criticized him as "fake news."" --much of it was fake news. There was no Russia connection ever proven for example so that nonsense spewed out on MSNBC and CNN for years was just BS. Also take note that those 'democratic supporter' media largely ignored stories like the Hunter Biden situation out of convenience.

SOWNY » The Day CHIC-FM Really Became CFNY » January 15, 2025 3:17 pm |
I was in Grade 12 in 1991 in Barrie.
My GF who had just moved up to Barrie with her family from Brampton complained that she couldn't hear her favorite stations anymore (98.5 and Majic 102).
Determined and in teenage Love, I strived to tune them in from North end of Barrie and was successful on many nights (perhaps with the right 'DX' environment) and recorded probably ten or more 60minute tapes of each station to play in the car as if we were listening live as we drove around in my parent's Buick.
I remember thinking how cool these stations were and especially that they were on 'FM'; way more interesting than listening to AM640 or CFTR at the time. Majic 102 had fun jingles too. I remember a few in particular (which I can't find a soundbite for on youtube unfortunately) that went like this:
'Buffalo's 100,000 Watt MONSTER station'
'The station that Shakes the Lakes and Rocks the Docks .. Majic 102-5'
There was also another jingle or perhaps the top of the hour marker that always mentioned Toronto.
'Buffalo, Rochester, Toronto'.. Majic 102'
As for CFNY, plenty of my friends enjoyed it back in high school days and I enjoyed the weekend club 102 shows as I worked midnights/cleaning shift for extra money at the local Bayfield McD's
Great stations!

Also, I'm saddened to see the BBM 'Censorship' BS that took place at the time. Obviously it was a threat and perhaps with significant numbers.

This Rock 102 Chart that I got at a record store in Scarborough in 1988 is probably indicative of a level of support for the station even at that late date. In fact on the left side of the chart you will see a list of Toronto locations that The Chart was available at:
EDIT: Just noticed that Do You Love Me by the Contours is on the chart. Must have been in a movie like Running Up The Hill's resurgance after Strangr Things. Also Rock 102 was always CHR before and after the Majic.

It says here that WBEN (102.5) 'Rock 102' actually got a measurable audience in Toronto at the time. Who was measuring it? Was the local ratings at the time actually reporting on it (and does anyone have a sample of ratings from that era in Toronto that shows it in the list?

I came across this article about the day one of the city's most important radio stations was just about to begin - CHIC-FM was a small nothing station in Brampton operating at 857 watts. You could hear it across the street and that was about it. But in 1977, the station got a power increase and then some - to an amazing 100,000 watts, which instantly made it a contender in the Toronto market.
It also caused some interference in places with nearby WBEN-FM, which had been attracting an increasing number of local listeners.
This story is about the newcomer, although no one knew at the time how it would shake-up the radio dial in Toronto, on its way to legendary status.

So, what exactly did Rock 102 WBEN play? Was it rock music, AOR, hard rock, or something else?
I remember late 80's to early 90's, 102.5 became CHR/R as 'Magic 102' and I have a few recordings on tape of their jingles which were fun.
If 'Rock 102' was so popular, when and why did it end and transition to CHR as Magic 102?

CBC would merge with PBS perhaps.
Generally speaking on the subject of becoming USA's 51rst state; I would be okay with it since it would end the facade that we are Sovern and make our own decisions. It would also mean that instead of competing with the economies of the american states, we'd work with them towards the same goals.

Fybush would indeed be an excellent commenter on this subject. I actually didn't give thought at first to the effects this would have on TV. The networks, the individual stations which are mostly O&O'd (owned & operated) in Canada, the retransmitters, whether new ones would be built, whether the companies that own the affiliates in the U.S would have any interest in our broadcast properties, etc.
Clearly things would change drastically. If you think of the line-ups of most Canadian networks, they buy shows that get offered up on the U.S. networks. Some are from CBS, others ABC, Fox or NBC.
That wouldn't work in the U.S.
CFTO, for example, would almost certainly have to affiliate with one of the networks and show only their programming. Same for Global and City TV. And there's no way of knowing what would happen to the CBC!

Unfortunately, we are still realizing the consequences of technology; specifically internet and being 'connected all the time' and how it relates to society, scammers, agendas and harm to our children. Meta which is Facebook has been politically compromised for at least a decade and has participated in regime changes. All Social media participated in silencing conversation around Covid for years and colluded with government. As a 51year old, I've experienced life before and after the advent of the internet and as a tech-savvy individual I can interpret things with an appropriate level of skepticism when needed but I am concerned for the current generation and also the seniors today being regularly targeted.

Of-course this basic survey while interesting has no foundation on demographics nor does it consider that people may have voted numerous times instead of once only. Still was interesting to see the results.
Since google sheets (docs) is free and open source, I was thinking of perhaps doing a simple spreadsheet to track over time the Numeris (etc) results and have a tracking chart available to all similar to what's available widely in USA such as this type of site from Radio Online.
I presume this board is searchable for previous results.

In round numbers, the GTA universe is 5,000,000 population. If we want 95% confidence in our survey results, and a margin of error of 1% (they claim they are measuring shares like 0.3), you need a sample size of 9585. You can play with a calculator here, using your own assumptions:
Conversely, a sample size of 601 gives you a margin of error of 4%, so at least half the stations surveyed have meaningless statistics.
The challenge is the Numeris is controlled by the biggies (on the top half of the list), so why would they vote for change (and extra expense)? As the Brits would say f*** you, I'm all right Jack.

I disagree. It’s technology and radios inability to adapt to our ‘Always connected’ world with on-demand.
I have a connection package with my car for about ten bucks a month and I get unlimited audio, web access and streaming plus access to to Tune-in and Spotify.
I never tune to any morning show anymore which we as a lot of talk if I’m in the mood for music; much of it ad-free
OTA ‘free to receive’ signals are going to disappear if this trend continues.
I also suggest that the recent advent of low-cost subscription streaming on (TV) with ads will fail.
