SOWNY » Rogers Cable Ottawa US Feeds Change » August 21, 2024 3:17 pm |
The original US channels in Ottawa were WPTZ Plattsburgh (NBC) , WWNY Watertown (all three networks at that time, but mostly CBS), and I believe the west end may have had a Syracuse channel.
WPTZ was unwatchable most of the time. WWNY had a sales office in Ottawa that did quite well, especially with Sunday afternoon hockey. In the mid 70s WPBS was added from the Norwood, NY transmitter and WUTR, Utica was also added from a rebroadcaster in Northern NY, perhaps Massens. It was an ABC affiliate.
They were later replaced by three Rochester channels that were brought in by microwave, When FOX got the NFC rights there was a FOX channel available but I can't remember if it was from Rochester or Buffalo. They were later replaced by Detroit, however WPBS Watertown is still the primary PBS station. During pledge drives they have a graphic that says Canadian funds at par.
Years ago I heard that 60 per cent of their funds came from Canada with 40 per cent of that number from Ottawa.

SOWNY » Thanks, Rogers » July 15, 2024 5:11 am |
I have Bell and this happens during the NFL season. While all of the sinsubs are set up by computer the N-F-L teams insist on playing after the three hour window. So, when one team is on the one-uyard line, threatening to take the lead, zap, I miss what happens and am transported to another game just starting. The answer is simple....have a real person sitting there to override the simsub.
I complain to the Commission and Bell sends me a note confirming I was right and then dance around saying they have hundreds of simsubs a week. I really don't care how many they have. I want my N-F-L.
One case manager at Bell even told me they had nothing to do with it. He blamed Fox. One of the most unusal simsubs occurred years ago. I tuned to watch the space shuttle returning to earth when on comes 'The Love Boat.' It appeared at one point the spacecraft was going to land on the deck!!!
SOWNY » Ottawa/Gatineau A Great Radio Market » July 9, 2024 5:55 pm |
Remember it was over a year ago that Rogers handed the licence for 1310CityNews back to the Commission.
Now, the only big players in Ottawa for information are C-F-R-A and C-B-C.
Yes, Ottawa is very underserved when it comes to English-language news.
The C-R-T-C is to blame for allowing Global and City to establish just transmitters. C-H-C-H has a low power transmitter in Ottawa.
As I have mentioned, there are many Sundays when there is no early news show.
Pretty dismal for a market this size, and the capital of Canada.
