Do Any Toronto Stations Still Do This On New Year's Eve?

I remember when I was a kid and way too young to go out for New Year's Eve, I would always look forward to CHUM playing a countdown of the top songs of the year on Dec. 31st or Jan. 1st. (The top 65 of 1965, the top 66 of 1966 etc.) It was a real event back in those days, although in this era of a zillion sources for entertainment, it would never have the same impact.

Is anyone in Southern Ontario doing this kind of countdown this year? It would most likely have to be a Top 40 or contemporary format or it wouldn't quite fit. Of course, it would take some effort - somebody to prepare the chart, write a script, present the show and so on, which likely means the big owners wouldn't bother to spend a dime of this sort of thing.

But this was a big deal back in the day. Are those days over for good?

Looks like Kiss 92.5 is up to something - although not quite for 2024. On Jan. 1st, the station is doing the Top 100 Throwbacks (what we used to call oldies) from the past 25 years. It starts at 10 AM.

Re: Do Any Toronto Stations Still Do This On New Year's Eve?

CHUM is running their top 30 of 2024.  The show is two hours long and runs on New Year's Eve and on January 1st.  I wonder how many times Taylor will be in the top 30?

Tarzan Dan is back in a big way with a special live New Year's Eve show on BOUNCE stations from 7pm-1am.

I imagine a lot of other stations like Virgin and some Rogers stations will run something similar to Saturday night and their dance party music programming.

I don't think this is live to air but Zoomer presents Gowan at the JW Marriot in Muskoka with a live concert and masquerade gala.  https://www.zoomerradio.ca/events/new-years-eve-at-jw-marriott-muskoka-featuring-gowan/

I grew up in Ottawa and I would always tune into the top 100 of the year that was, truthfully it was fun and it hooked me in until they played the number one song!

Here is the Top 100 from 1978 on CFGO radio... Now it is TSN1200...

Where is Boom 97.3 in all of this?? Where is their countdown?
A Stingray countdown for all (all that apply) Stingray stations makes good sense as a money saver, no?

The Giant FM have a new years music for tonight, playing a classic rock mix that will have you screaming that 2024 end!!!

Oh, and Jazz FM has a series of programs to bring in the new year, Dani Elwell, Rich Brown and Danny Marks to name a few will host an evening full of a jazz blues mix.

Re: Do Any Toronto Stations Still Do This On New Year's Eve?

I'm just waiting to see if anyone plays "In The Year 2525" at midnight. Yes, it's not the actual date, but it's the closest any of us are going to get to the time in the song! (Unless you're going to be around 500 years from now, when I'll still be complaining about simsub and the death of AM!)

Happy New Year to all SOWNY members and visitors!

Re: Do Any Toronto Stations Still Do This On New Year's Eve?

How about a hit where 2025 is sung in the chorus?

That's brilliant Lorne! I never would have thought of that song.

It's actually Auld Lang Syne, based on a Scottish poem by Robbie Burns. Here's what it means.

Or you could choose to use it the way the late, great song satirist Allan Sherman did:

Thanks for putting the propper spelling for Auld Lang Syne.
I knew what it ment, but did not know how it was spelt.
I think one of the stations should have played the John Mcdurmut versian.

boom & the Classic Hits Stingray stations had a “Non-Stop New Years” party with Matt Storey as host. Commercial free/party music, that seemed to do well.
