What Are They Thinking At CTV Toronto News?

I'm continually amazed at whoever is producing the 6 PM local news shows many nights over at CFTO. Saturday was a perfect case in point.

You have a motorcyclist killed in a terrible crash, breaking news about a stabbing on Dufferin St., a ton of hot shots focusing on car accidents, a house fire that may have been the result of a domestic dispute and another Liberal MP coming out and openly calling for his leader to resign. There's lots to choose from.

So what did CFTO think was the most important story of the day and what do they choose for a lede on Saturday's 6 PM show? A reporter's story on a Muslim Youth Basketball Tournament. And no, you didn't read that wrong. What was essentially a halfway down the pack/block of what is otherwise a PSA was the story they thought viewers had to know about first.

Don't get me wrong - there's nothing wrong with the story itself. But how you make that the lede is forever beyond me. I've produced news shows over the years and have never led with what is essentially a kicker/neighbourhood-type tale. Even if some of their other stuff wasn't cut in time, that is simply not a lede.

It's not the first time I've seen this kind of thing. What in the world are they thinking over there?

Re: What Are They Thinking At CTV Toronto News?

By the way, here's a great story I heard from someone who worked at City TV in the 80s and 90s.

It was a blazing hot summer day and there was absolutely nothing going on. No major accidents, no meetings or controversies, nothing. The late, great Clint Nickerson was producing what was then called CityPulse at 6. At 4 PM, he was trying to find something - anything - worthy of a top story. But there just wasn't anything really going on. It was a typical sleepy summer day in the Toronto of old and for that moment, the city seemed like a small town.

And then, around 5 PM, the heavens opened up and out popped a major thunderstorm, a heavy downpour that soaked the streets and left people outside running for cover. It only lasted about 20 minutes and then was gone. But in his desperation, Nickerson decided to lead with the story of the thunderous monsoon.

Lorne Honickman was filling in as anchor on the show that day and when he saw what Clint had planned, he complained, "wait you're going to lead with a story of a short thunderstorm and then throw to (then weatherman) David Onley standing on Queen St. in bright sunshine? That's ridiculous!"

But Nickerson, who had some pretty good viz of the thunder and lightning, complained he had no other choice. So sure enough, on came the 6 PM news with a somewhat exaggerated story of how it rained cats and dogs, with Onley giving an update saying all was now clear.

End of crisis.

But for years afterwards, Honickman would tell the story of the worst lead he'd ever been forced to present. And he revealed what he really wanted to say that afternoon, but couldn't.

"Good evening. It's raining.. Now let's go out to Queen St. with David Onley, where it's not raining!"

I'd have paid to see that one!

Modern day rules for News coverage in 2024/2025 onward:
Sponsored storey FIRST
Lead story second.
Very strict rule...therefore, if the Youth Basketball tournament is sponsored by Bell in any way, you go with that FIRST!!!
Anything else is second.
