Trivial comments about Trivia
I usually listen to 1010 on Sunday morning for maybe half an hour or so of Trivia, then the bumbling Jason Agnew gets on my nerves. His go-to fill in when he's gone is the ubiquitous Richard Crause, who is always entertaining, But today it was a bit odd.
He had a bad cold with a sore throat which prompted contestants to offer suggestions for home cold remedies.
At first it was amusing, but the topic almost took over completely from the trivia show, and became quite boring.
But something also made me blink.
Almost every caller began their call with "Morning Richard, how are you?"
To which, Bizarrely Richard replied, "I'm very well thankyou."
Huh?
The whole show was about how not very well he was.
And people were asking how he was, knowing he had a cold and they were giving him home remedy advice.
Anyway after about half an hour of that I tuned out.
Weird.

It's a crutch that nervous callers always use. It used to be so bad that the late Rush Limbaugh coined the word "ditto" to keep the people from doing the "How are you?" bit for his entire show.
The other one that drives me crazy is "as I was telling your screener..." No one heard you talking to the screener, during the previous brief chat you had to get you on the air. But I'd say a good seven out of 10 callers refer to it almost very single time.

The idea of the show is perfectly good.
It's just presented by a bumbling dolt.
But then I suppose it's better than three hours of Jerry Agar praising Donald Trump.

Might be just me but in the era of Google, these trivia shows seem, well...trivial. It's no longer about what obscure tidbit you might happen to know but how fast you can look it up while waiting on hold.

How do they manage to be wrong so regularly, then? "He won an Oscar for playing the titular character in 1972's 'The Godfather'!" "Uhhhh, gee, um, I'm not sure... Christopher Walken?"
There's a subset of older callers who seem to just dial in and hope they'll have a clue. Afternoon drive program on AM 740 showcases this.
Can I change my screen name from Easily Amused to Grumpy Curmudgeon? 🤔

Actually Walter, it was more of a Boxing Day miracle as part of the prize were tickets to see the Marlies at the ScotiaBank centre. I took my son and a couple of his pals, all but one came from single parent families. None had ever been to the ScotiaBank centre or a pro hockey game of any type, so that was a good prize pack not only for me! The seats were amazing and the lads had a blast!

As a regular trivia show listener, and frequent prize winner, I'm glad all you geniuses won't stoop low enough to call in and try your luck. The free meals, shopping and gas cards and show tickets are nice once in awhile. And hearing the really stupid answers or non-answers can be great fun. To each their own.
But you're right about many callers to that show, and pretty much all other radio shows, asking the host how they are. Really tiresome. I also resisted giving Richard Crouse a cold remedy.

I’m with you dieter, I like winning stuff too, and I find the show entertaining. I find people who knock things generally speaking are envious of those who enjoy it, real wallys!

Our group of 4 will salute during our dinner at Mandarin next week. In the meantime,you should try for tickets to the New Year's Eve comedy show at Massey Hall if you know your Xmas movies.

Speaking of Christmas movies, if you haven't seen the Patrick Stewart version of "A Christmas Carol," you should look it up.
It's superb.
Yes, it's a Hallmark production, but don't let that discourage you.
It's such an accurate depiction of that era, with terrific costumes and decor.
