Why Radio Can Be A "Going" Concern

Jerry Agar told a story on Thursday that I've heard from so many on-air types before - how do you get to the bathroom in the middle of a show when you really, really have to go?

I have to say it never happened to me as far as I remember, but Agar's story sounds familiar to others I've heard. He was working the night shift at an oldies station in Minnesota when he realized he had to go to the bathroom. The problem? The john was down at the very far end of the building and the records were only 2 minutes long. In those days, there was no automation that could fire the next tune, so as he sat there trying to figure out what to do, the urge got worse and worse.

Finally, he spotted a song coming up in the rotation - "Nights In White Satin" by the Moody Blues, a tune that runs at least 4 minutes if you play the edited single version and over 5 minutes if you take it off the album. He spotted his opportunity, put on the record and dashed from the control room and into the long hallway.

That's when he heard the door click and realized he'd locked himself out of the station. The bathroom now completely forgotten, he tried desperately to get back in, to no avail. At that exact moment, the elevator dinged, the door opened and a security guard appeared. "Something wrong?" he asked an increasingly worried Agar, who told him to get out the key and let him back in before the song ran out.

He made it in time, although there's no word on whether he ever did get back to the little boy's room.

Has this kind of thing ever happened to anyone here? It sounds like a nightmare that only a broadcaster could experience. You may not have to answer the request line, but the Call of Nature is a very different thing!
