Global Releases 2025 Schedule With 1 Cdn. Show - & The Rest American

No one should be surprised that Global's New Year slate is filled with mostly U.S. shows. The network is emphasizing the return of its "Family Law," a made-in-Canada drama series. But that's one hour a week. The rest, not surprisingly, seems to be dedicated to shows they can simulcast with U.S. entities.

I'll probably give "Watson" a look. It's a show about what happened to the assistant to Sherlock Holmes after the detective's death.

There's one weird aspect to the press release announcing all the newcomers.

"Joining Global’s new drama slate this winter is the reimagined classic game show Hollywood Squares, starring award-winning Drew Barrymore as the centre square and hosted by Nate Burleson, the games begin Thursday, January 9 at 8 p.m. ET/PT. "

Hollywood Squares a drama? That's a new one on me. I guess if you give the wrong answer, someone shoots at you. In any event, they've tried to remake this game show before and they've never even come close to the original.

I think that line about Hollywood Squares joining their slate of dramas is a bit weird. The new HS sounds like a regular game show.

Regarding the number of Canadian shows... if the 1 Canadian show is really good, I'd rather see that than several mediocre or bad Canadian shows clogging up the schedule.

Corus, like Bell seem to be putting their money for original productions more into their specialty channels along with Crave and STACK TV.  Corus for example has 14 new and returning original shows for their new Flavour and Home Networks launching in a few weeks.

Global has more than Family Law for Canadian programming in prime time.  Crime Beat runs Friday at 10pm, dramas Private Eyes and Ransom also appear usually on Saturday evening and occasionally mid week.  And of course Global has lots of cancon during the day.

While true that Global and CTV rely on simsubed US programming in the evening, it is not as consistent and seems to be more selective compared to years ago. Possibly since US prime time programming on OTA TV has been lacking with generally poor ratings for quite some time.
