If you ever watched the old campy Batman TV show on ABC back in the mid-60s, you almost certainly recall the voice of the narrator, who would come on at the end of every episode and promo the next one.
He used this overly dramatic and exaggerated stentorian tone, asking things like “Is this the end of our Caped Crusader? Will help come in time? Stayed tuned next week, same Bat-time, same Bat-Channel!”
The guy almost became a star in his own right, even though no one had any idea who he was.
Turns out it was William Dozier, the show’s producer, who knew exactly what he wanted the announce voice to sound like, but couldn’t find the right person despite numerous auditions. So he decided to do it himself, even though he wasn’t an announcer.
It was a smart move, as it turns out. That overly hyped pronouncement became not only legendary back then, but has been frequently parodied over the years as a classic of its kind. And all because the right voice wasn’t around.

As a kid, this was my favourite TV show, followed by The Wild, Wild West. I couldn’t handle the cliff- hanger endings every week, although you always knew Batman and Robin would persevere! And how many times have you heard “same Bat-time, same Bat-channel” being ripped off?? Thanks for sharing RA.
