Did Moses Znaimer make Toronto great?

This article says yes, he did, and the author laments that more people aren't talking about it. I lived and worked outside of the GTA for most of the "glory years" of CITY-TV, so I don't really think I can comment effectively on this issue. But local GTA media veterans and others, what's your take?

Opinion: Moses Znaimer made Toronto great. Why don't we talk about him more?

Re: Did Moses Znaimer make Toronto great?

Make Toronto great seems like a bit of a stretch.  Moses made Toronto media more interesting, but he also gave credit to Allan Waters from CHUM who let him do his thing.  Allan also helped a lot on the investment side.

I did have a friend from the US who absolutely loved CityTV, and MuchMusic.  He thought Much was better than MTV and he really liked City TV and their downtown street smart attitude.  He told me that he had seen TV from all over the world and had never seen anything like City TV.  He thought Speakers Corner was brilliant, along with the way they handled news.  This guy was not a media person but did have a healthy interest in TV and programming.

Re: Did Moses Znaimer make Toronto great?

When I arrived in Canada in 81, CityTV told me very clearly what mattered in Toronto. CBC provided the vanilla overview, bur CityTV fed the current that contained local happenings from the politics to entertainment and to the hard news issues. And all from the vision of one person who wanted to do something different.

Moses deserves every bit of credit for CITY TV's innovations, but John Martin should be the man credited for making Much Music the success it became.

Re: Did Moses Znaimer make Toronto great?

I think Moses Znaimer put Toronto/Canada on the broadcasting map. Citytv was gutsy and innovative and MuchMusic raised the music television bar, being live, it was way ahead of pre-taped MTV. Moses may not have made Toronto great, but he created great “Toronto Television”, and a pretty vibrant workplace. I think I can safely say that most of the employees were proud of where they worked and many of us miss it very much! It was the golden years of Canadian broadcasting IMO, now long gone. Good job Moses!
