Radio Ratings: If Only We Had This Access
Ever since Numeris decided to guard Canadian radio ratings like they were in Fort Knox, it's rare for us to get a real look at what's happening in Toronto.
Fortunately, that's not the case in the U.S., where Nielsen makes the data publicly available. I frequently enjoy having a look at what's going on in Buffalo, currently the 59th market in America.
This is a terrific updated database that lists every market down south, from #1 (New York) to #200 (Winchester, Virginia), some of them monthly.
If you're curious what the latest numbers are in the U.S., you can find the linked list here.
Maybe one day, we'll have access to something like this.

I'm not 100% sure but I think the reason was the information was proprietary and only those who paid for it were authorized to see it. It wasn't like that back in the BBM days.
Numeris is BBM. It’s just a re-brand.
It’s a good question though, because the numbers they made public had absolutely no value to stations or agencies.
Maybe too many prospective advertisers were trying to bypass paying by using numbers they didn’t know were useless?

I had heard over the years that CHUM did beat CFRB a couple of times in the ratings. Here is a CHUM chart from this day in 1961 with CHUM claiming that they had almost 40% of the listenership in metro Toronto, and almost as many listeners as the next two Toronto stations combined. Likely CKEY and CFRB? Don't know if it is legit and the survey wasn't from BBM. Also heard that CHUM had one book in 1971 or 72 that they also bested CFRB. Again I am a little skeptical since I have never seen any proof of this. Maybe it was that they just beat RB in a key demo.

I remember a year or so ago historical BBM books were posted online at Canadiana Collections, and then just a few months later they quietly disappeared.
Seems like a lot of work to scan all those books just to have them scrubbed.

As you can see at the bottom of the back page of the CHUM chart, this was a survey conducted by Elliot-Haynes, an independent survey company in Canada at the time.
