Vassy Kapelos is pretty well known as a fair minded, no nonsense journalist.
I think on that we can all agree.
So I was surprised yesterday during her Sunday morning CTV Question Period to see both Brian Stelter & David Frum tag team during a segment regarding the Trump hush money trial.
Mr. Stelter from Vanity Fair and Mr. Frum from the Atlantic, both leftist publications. And predictably, their commentary was completely one side-sided. You would think Mr. Trump was being led to the gallows the way these two "guests" carried on.
Made me wonder where is the fair and balanced Vassy we have come to know? And should the network or perhaps she insisted on a guest to counter the "hatchet-job" you know was coming a thousand times out of a thousand from these two?
Vassy where are you?

TIL, George W. Bush's speech-writer is a "leftist"

sometimes there simply is no other valid side ..

Frum may be writing now for a so-called "leftist" publication, but as mentioned above he was Bush's speech writer
Although he did not write the famous "axis of evil" line and he has admitted that.
Also as g121 notes sometimes there really is no other side to an argument.
Although Donald Trump did say there were "very fine people" among the neo Nazi protesters in Charlottesville.

There is no defending that piece of human excrement that's why. He was a crap president who spent most of his time playing golf, downplayed the pandemic causing thousands of needless deaths, mocked the disabled, cheated on every single one of his wives, and enriched himself by hosting political events at his own hotels.
Anyone who thinks Trump deserves defending probably is the one that should re-examine their own morals and ideology.

To get this back on a media related basis, here's a look at the coverage of this case from the New York Times.

hehehe...Vassy cut her chops in Alberta...meaning she's about as balanced as a 3-legged rhino....there is no honest way to make a reasonable case that Trump is a victim or being treated unfairly...unless she had one of his cult followers or a Republican looking to be re-elected on as a guest to spew their bullshyt propaganda...Trump is a bottom feeder and will be proven a criminal...history will look back on him with disgust and ridicule.

It was obvious that today's Question Period was taped pre Trudeau's trip to meet Trump. Two days can be a lifetime in news today. Maybe get a host who doesn't have a weekday TV and radio show who can do it live?

I think she did make reference to it with that now infamous photo at the top of the show, but yes, the rest of the program left it out entirely.
I believe it mostly tapes on Friday and Saturday, with a short availability for any new info if needed added late on show day. But for the most part, it's in the can by the first day of the weekend. That's why she's never on the radio Fridays, prepping for Question Period.
Frankly given the news cycle of late, I'm surprised this doesn't happen more often.

Does she need to do better? She gave airtime to Frum. Yeah she sure as fuck needs to do better. Drunken bush-league judgement on her part. Who will she platform next? Sue-Ann Levy? What an embarrassment.
EDIT: Half the time she can't be bothered to show up to her CFRB show.

Perhaps switch things up a bit for Vassy's show on 1010 for the next four to five months.
Vassy helms the show Mondays and Wednesdays, Scott Reid does Tuesdays and Thursdays and Amanda Galbraith does her regular Friday show.
This gives Vassy lots of time for her other work, keeps both the radio/tv sides running smoothly and allows listeners/viewers to stay up to date with the most important unfolding stories. And producers and talent don't end up looking like they can't handle their workload.
With the political landscape as unsettled and volatile as it is, several hosts could be a good temporary solution for everyone.

The sad reality is that news coverage has largely become tribal. Sadder still, is the necessity of rummaging through multiple sources to even get to a semblance of the truth. Except of of course social media, where truth goes to die.

I think this board could do better by referring to her as Kapelos if we're going to respect male hosts by calling them Oakley, Fury, Mulroney, etc.

and would 1010 find different intro and outro music for her show?
That bloody frantic violin strumming repetitive infuriating monotonous grind just drives me crazy.
And they keep playing it, over and over.
I have to turn it off.
Other hosts get a variety of stinger and bumper music.
Where did they get that horrid brain eating earworm piece of crap? RFK junior?

I'm new here but used to work in the radio business in Toronto for about seven years. I must say that I'm somewhat taken aback by not only the negative tone of some of the comments on various topics here, but also the use of unnecessary profanity (Chrisphen). I’ve always been a believer that open dialogue is a way to offer differing opinions, but some of the comments here are disrespectful and not constructive.

A warm welcome Stefanie
Some of our members are passionate. Some are argumentative. Some are (often) irritable while others I swear, are short-sighted.
Keeps things lively!!
My unsolicitied advice to you is to enjoy yourself and roll with the punches...of which there may be many...

So sorry.

To paraphrase that early viral social media nutbar:
"Leave Vassy ALONE!! You're lucky she even does a RADIO SHOW for you BAS**RDS!!!" (censored for Stefanie).

I hear ya, but it wasn't long ago this place was an all-out brawl every day. In retrospect, it's amazing it survived. But yes I believe it's better to keep things civil.

I think Vassey's best show is Power Play which is on weekday afternoons on CTV News Channel. I believe the show is normally live, so it is always timely. Also enjoy Power & Politics on CBC News Network. David Cochrane is also a good host and has a pleasant sense of humour. These two programs are on at the same time but Power & Politics is two hours finishing at 7pm in the east. Overall I would say that Power Play has slightly better panelists, but CBC's show is more in depth since they have the extra hour.

As Dale said, Stephanie, you should seen it what it was like a few years back. But, for the most part, we are all adults here, opinions are going to vary and be written in the spur of the moment. It's a message board on radio, it is what it is.
