Oakley's On Vacation Next Week. But Who's Left To Take His Place?

First you have a mass firing. Then you have to replace your afternoon voice.

That's the dilemma facing AM640 management, as John Oakley confirms he's going away on vacation next week. Normally, Ben Mulroney would fill in. But he now has his own show and they don't exactly have a ready replacement. Anthony Furey? Kevin Vuong? (Doesn't he have to be in the House of Commons?) It's not a large number of possible subs.

I'll be curious to see who they get.

Speaking of curious, still no immediate word on who will be hosting Toronto This Weekend, the 7- 10 AM show on Saturday and Sunday. Mulroney was the regular host. He's obviously not going to be working seven days a week. It will be interesting to hear if the show is still on, whether it's replaced with rerolls and if not, who's in that chair.

Radio vet Christine Cardoso has subbed before. Could she get the gig permanently? Should be an interesting game of musical chairs (or on a talk station, non-musical chairs) over the next few days.

If he pays for the time, they could just let Tom ramble on incoherently for 3 hours.

Jeff Marek sitting in for the vacationing John Oakley and giving listeners a hockey centric show probably wouldn't be possible but man I'd love to hear him on the radio again.

Fury would be possible, but he'd be coming off a humiliating political defeat.
Or they could just squeeze together the time by extending Alex Pierson and just have Global TV programming start earlier.
They really don't have much to work with.
Or they could just have some infomercials.

Marek used to work there when it was Mojo...that would interesting.

Or they could bring back Peter Shurman.

The world would be so good if it weren't for some people...

Marek had to hustle. He used that phrase going into every break during his tenure with Bill Watters.

Turns out the answer is, in fact, Anthony Furey, who appears to have been named the new permanent weekend show host. Whether this means he's no longer available for fill-in elsewhere remains to be seen. Same regular weekly guests as when Mulroney was there, which gets kind of tiresome.

Turns out Oakley is on vacation for two weeks, not just one. He'll probably be back just in time to take more vacation over Christmas!

How many times does one really need to hear from Glenn Crouter?

Yep, totally agree. A great broadcaster doing an absolute tune-out segment twice every show, rattling on about events I have no interest in and will never go to. Nice to know I'm not the only one who feels that way.

Anthony Furey revealed at the end of his first weekend shift that he'd also be sitting in for Oakley - at least during his first week off. Still not sure who is taking the second week.

Re: Oakley's On Vacation Next Week. But Who's Left To Take His Place?

I can't fathom why Glenn Crouter still does what he does.
It's a throwback to radio of the 60s 70s and not even the 80s.
Maybe it's just a cynical way to fill time on slow weekends, but it can't possibly be because people need this information.
If you are going to ski at Blue Mountain, then you know when it's open and who says, "oh my gosh they are having a apple cider festival" in some town you've never heard of, and then rush off to go there.
Back in the 60s and 70s on Vancouver radio CKNW used to send a reporter to go to the bus depot every morning and interview people getting off buses.
"Hi where are you from?  What brings you to Vancouver?"

I have no direct knowledge of this, but my suspicion is he gets paid for promoting whatever the events are. Maybe a deal with the Ontario Ministry of Tourism?
