If you're in Barrie, you probably know Kool-FM, the station at 107.5. Charlie Desantia has been one of the morning co-hosts there for years and mostly makes light of everything.
Until she got diagnosed with breast cancer. That's how she almost ended up appearing topless in an annual station calendar to benefit Gilda's Place, a resource centre named after the late Gilda Radner, to help people with the disease.
In the end, they chose to go with a pic of her behind the mic, because she felt that's the way listeners picture her. But they did take the alternate photo before the decision to substitute another one was made.
"Although she’d been supporting the calendar for years, Charlie admitted she didn’t realize exactly what she was getting herself into. But she’s proud of how her month — she represents February — turned out.
“I knew Raw and Reflective and what they always did was … everybody was naked. You don’t really appreciate how difficult that is until you’re in that position, because it’s not like just taking a regular photo. You are very, very vulnerable and very aware … in my case that I was topless,” said the Innisfil resident."
A talented - and very courageous - lady.
