The Voice Of Midwestern Ontario Radio Signs Off

Most here have probably never heard of Phil Main, but he's a household name in Wingham, where he's been on the radio for decades. He's hanging up his headphones after over 40 years on air in a career that mostly involved one market (with a stop at CJJD in Hamilton, a place he hated.)

He's been the morning voice on both AM and FM in the small market city, and has decided to call it a career.

"In March 1990, Main was doing his show when the program director informed him the morning host had quit. Main grabbed the opportunity and asked if it would be “stupid for him to apply.” She said, “Consider the next couple of weeks your audition,” and Main was hired for the morning show. On April 2, 1990, Main went on as CKNX’s morning man, a position he did not yield until 34 years later."

Well done Phil!  Enjoy your well deserved retirement.  Nice that you are moving back to beautiful Goderich.
Your many fans will miss you in the morning show.  All the best.

Was he at the WAVE FM in Hamilton doing news about 10+ years ago? There was a newscaster named Phil Meighan.

I thought name was appropriate for news, Fill me in....

If not congrats on a good career.

The world would be so good if it weren't for some people...

Re: The Voice Of Midwestern Ontario Radio Signs Off

As far as I know, Phil has always been an announcer.  And as the article says he has been mornings at CKNX for the last 34 years.  He did work briefly at CJJD in 1980 after college, but the rest of his radio career was in Wingham.  Phil was a versitile guy, and was well suited to A/C-top 40, country or classic rock. He did these formats over his time with AM 920, FM 102, The Bull and COOL FM.

While driving today, I tuned in to CKNX. Sounds like they're really getting socked with snow up there.
