All T.O. TV Stations Covered Remembrance Day Ceremonies - Except One

I watched the Remembrance Day ceremonies on Toronto TV Monday and was pleased to note almost every one of them had extensive coverage, especially at 11AM, the time of the traditional two minutes of silence.

All except one. I briefly turned around the channels to see who was doing what and was stunned to see City TV showing The Price Is Right right on the stroke of 11 o'clock. Not a good look for them, although as it turns out, they were doing their annual Veteran's Day episode, in which military people were allowed to "come on down."

That still doesn't make it right. Two minutes or so once a year does not seem like a lot to ask. They could easily have gone live from Toronto City Hall, when most everyone else was doing the coverage from Ottawa.

Guess it wasn't worth the money to Rogers. Pity.

No pitty. The motivation was to drive viewers to their Citynews 24/7 channel.
All the money went into that and they did an excellent job.

I strongly suggest you look into these things instead of spewing garbage about Rogers.
It's 2024. Many are also watching online with Prime video.

I was about to type this exactly...    CityNews 24/7 had everything...  It's a free available channel on cable and digital streaming.

As well... If I'm not mistaken, Price is Right comes direct from the US CBS feed live, which may cause issue trying to squeeze in a 2 min stop in programming without missing part of the show.   I have a feeling that most fans would find that more upsetting when there is an option available for Remembrance Day.     Most networks run pre-recorded programming at that time, and likely can shuffle things around.

Times have changed... and options are available.

Re: All T.O. TV Stations Covered Remembrance Day Ceremonies - Except One

Everyone else made time on their main channels.

It's inexcusable if, as you say, City had coverage online and didn't want to forgo the commercial time it sold for The Price is Right to simulcast it. If they were already there and chose not to put it on broadcast TV, in my mind, that just makes it worse.

The others also have online channels. That didn't stop them from showing it live over-the-air. So I repeat. Shame on Rogers. That was an unforgiveable decision.

So you want Citynews 24/7 to air on City TV?

More of an observation than an opinion: The distinction between a broadcast station like CityTv, or a cable station like TSN -- or even a streaming service is becoming smaller and smaller. I don't think the public really has different expectations in terms of who stops down and who doesn't.

If a station were live and running news and didn't stop down, I'd have a problem with that. But not breaking in to The Price is Right is effectively no different than not breaking in on FX.

For that half an hour, yes. I'm sure the other 24/7 streaming channels connected to Global, CBC and CTV did the same thing.

It's 30 minutes or less once a year for God's sake! They couldn't find room for it on traditional television?

Because, as we all know, those people fought and died so we could watch someone win a car on Cliff Hangers...

I may be the only one who feels this way, and if so, that's OK. Everyone else interrupted their schedules to run the ceremonies commercial free. It was the very least they could do. City, as a licenced on-air TV station designed to serve the public, didn't do even the least.

Re: All T.O. TV Stations Covered Remembrance Day Ceremonies - Except One

I know CTV London had a livestream on their site from city hall for Rememberance Day. But the question is: Why couldn't CTV London put the local Rememberance Day ceremony on their CTV 2 station instead of the national feed from CTV News Channel and the main CTV channel? I wonder if CTV London had an excuse not to show the local ceremony on TV or over-the-air. Now I don't think if the local Rogers TV London station aired any live Rememberance Day ceremonies. But the Rogers TV stations in Owen Sound and Barrie livestreamed their local Remeberance Day ceremonies.

Re: All T.O. TV Stations Covered Remembrance Day Ceremonies - Except One

On CBC News Network Remembrance Day is almost an all day event. This afternoon they are running feature backgrounder stories and their bumpers in and out of commercials are reflecting the day. They are covering the major stories but Remembrance Day is still very prominent.

Interesting that they have visited a few highschools and talked to students on the meaning of November 11th.  Students at one school in Waterdown started "The Museum Of Hope" which has photos and displays from the wars that Canada was involved.  The display got to be so big that the students moved the museum from the school to the local legion.

I wonder if this has caught the attention of the CRTC in some way. Rogers has made their streaming news channel essentially a cable channel by putting it at the top of the EPG on most of its own cable systems.

Re: All T.O. TV Stations Covered Remembrance Day Ceremonies - Except One

I agree with RA on this one in that they should have out of respect.  CITY-TV is carried by many cable systems in Ontario and both satellite BDU's, whereas CityNews is only for Rogers subs. Probably Rogers didn't want to loose the Price is Right viewership to the US CBS affiliates, which run it at the same time. It's a business decision and under the current environment, they can't afford to lose the revenue. I just see it as a sign of how tight things have become.

I would like to spew some garbage about Rogers here. Having worked for them for over 6 years I can say with some authority that firstly, they don’t really give a crap about the communities they milk, or their staff for that matter. Money is the only thing they care about, seriously. You want proof? Edward Rogers, the company’s head honcho had no problem throwing his mother and sister under the bus in a boardroom fracas, (he also donated to Trump, but I am not getting into politics here), and they had no problems pilfering HGTV and Food  Network from Corus, knowing that these channels were essential to the financially struggling Corus. Citynews is a step above community programming, and I’m being kind, it hasn’t improved at all under Rogers. So it doesn’t surprise me that this failed news operation didn’t cover Remembrance Day, because it might have cost them, although every other broadcaster seemed to find the resources and decency to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice so we don’t have to goose step. How about them Jays?
