Radio personality Alan Cross announced on X that he has cancelled his National Post subscription due to reporter Michael Taube’s October 30th endorsement of Trump, and it would appear others have followed Cross’ lead. This is too bad for the Post as I don’t think the entire paper agreed with Taube and now they’re losing business they won’t get back. I’ll (hopefully) be happy when the US elections are done.

Politics in the U.S. has always been divisive for a great many of its citizens. Sadly, with this election cycle, that has spilled over into this country causing rifts between friends, colleagues and family members. i have experienced a little of this first hand and find it deeply disturbing.
The argument is often made that we need to be involved because the outcome of this election will have ripple effects north of the border. True as that may be, unless you hold U.S. citizenship, there isn't anything you can do about it.
What you can and should do is become more invested in Canada's political scene, federally, provincially and especially on a local level. Sure it's not as glitzy or "showbizzy" but it affects our lives directly each and every day. Some time within the next year there will be a federal election and we need to pay closer attention to what our candidates stand for and how their actions impact our lives. There are media outlets that provide more fact-based reporting and now is the time to follow what is happening to cut through the spin and rhetoric to make an informed choice on this side of the border. It would be great to see more Canadians fired up enough to turn out in droves leading up to our election.

Good, I would love to see NP and Financial Post go belly under. I have no problem with a right-wing media publication that spreads propaganda losing customers and going bankrupt. The kind of effect that FOX News has had in the US has been detrimental to the entire country. To have NP around, never mind an even bigger rag like the Toronto Sun, invites that same kind of derision up here.
And just a reminder for those who don't know, both NP and FP are owned by Chatham Asset Management, a New Jersey-based hedge fund, holds a significant equity stake in Postmedia and majority ownership of American Media Inc., which owns the National Enquirer. Not exactly a great pedigree.

Most of their original subscribers were FP subscribers that were grandfathered in, and most of those cancelled soon after reading the result.
Not sure who would have considered a subscription proper to the National Post. It has been dogshit since day one.

I guess some people don't wish to hear opposing views to broaden their horizons. This echo chamber world we seem to live in now services nobody.
But Alan's reaction makes me wonder - how many followers of Alan's would even read the National Post? I just don't see that part of the Venn Diagram being all that large.

No Binson, some people don't want to hear outright lies and propaganda. I'm a writer and I'm trained on the kinds of Nazi-style propaganda tactics that right-wing parties use (a lot of which relies on controlling the news media and polls and creating misinformation to confuse voters so that they don't know what way to vote or even what their best interests should be).
The Conservatives (aka the Reform Party using the good will and branding of the Conservative name) have been using non-stop propaganda attacks for years now, even before the pandemic. And a right-wing billionaire hedge fund that owns most of our newspapers here in Canada has been more than happy to skew the truth so long as it serves their agenda. I've been alive long enough to know that any outlook that serves a billionaire's agenda isn't one that's good for the common working man.
And for the record, when I was a young man, I was actually right-leaning in my political views. It's been seeing how the people on the right behave and conduct themselves that I shifted far away from those kinds of folks.

Can't remember the last time I bought a dead-tree newspaper. Anything I want news-wise I can get for free on the Internet.

Anyone who would endorse Trump for president needs to be put away in the asylum invented for the McKenzie Brother's film, "Strange Brew," The Royal Canadian Institute for the Mentally Insane.

Saturday editions are not "news" papers, per se. Content is substantially Opinions and Analyses (background to news of the day)

Rosy LaRose deserves better company.
Watch out for Brewmeister Smith!

Postmedia is owned by American interests very friendly with Trump. They used to be considered centre/right but are now in the business of straight-up right wing propaganda. Along with the litany of Canadian disinformation websites (many with shady funding) they are responsible for the notion that Canada is somehow broken and Trudeau is terrible. The reality is, Canada is at or near the top of any metric you’d use to measure a country’s success compared to others.

I always wonder how the Globe and Mail is doing. An excellent newspaper in my opinion and visually put together well. I am surprised they have continued with the glossy front and back pages a couple of days a week and on some sections. That is expensive to do, and very few daily papers anywhere have regular glossy pages.
Still pick up the National Post occasionally or go to their website. I enjoy their Driving.ca reviews and videos. Some of the best vehicle video reviews anywhere. Politically they have some interesting articles but are too anti CBC, and go over the top with their support of the orange one and most things Conservative.
But in fairness, I find the Toronto Star too politically correct and still petty and overly negative regarding Doug Ford. They seem to think that they are the opposition. That is the job of the Ontario Liberals and NDP, not a newspaper.

I don’t think reporting on the most corrupt premiere in Ontario history and his many scandals is petty or negative. Especially when you have one of the main columnists at the Toronto Sun sharing a bed with Ford’s press person.

And that's just it. Objective reporting doesn't treat different viewpoints equally; it finds the facts - and sometimes that makes one "side" look worse than the other.

In 2014 Canada had the richest Middle Class in the world. Then we got boy wonder. Today Ontario has the same per cap GDP as Alabama and the eastern Provinces are at the level of the State of Mississippi, which is the very bottom of America productivity. (You can thank Alberta for fiscally floating Canada) All this is easy to verify.
The word 'disinformation' is a controlling term employed to maintain power over a narrative. If you disagree with the National Post written account then present a coherent rebuttal.

Those gold newspaper boxes were rusted hulks within a year of production. It was a sight to see! More labour went into lowly store clerks cutting out the first page of unsold copies for return than to the Post's 'journalism'.
I must commend them on one thing - they've kept the con going for a long time. There are some who consider it a legitimate news source.

Interesting information. Where's your source? You ask for coherent rebuttal but fail to cite where your claims come from.
You may as well be another blowhard without them so post some links so we can vet your source, because this is the first time I've heard that claim and since Alberta's GDP is less than 1/2 of Ontario's and only 16% of Canada's, one of your points doesn't add up right from the start. Canada GDP and per capita GDP

Please provide a legitimate source. Also, many Canadians get confused about Provincial versus Federal responsibilities.

I think this hedge fund who bought this will discover that there is just not enough money in politics in Canada. An American friend of mine says the the US has a political-industrial complex, in reference to Eisenhower's military-industrial complex.

Just stop with the partisan political debate here. The original topic of this post was the National Post's decrease in subscribers, and you people turned it into yet another off-topic, right versus left, liberal versus conservative, Republican versus Democrat argument. If you don't like that people don't align with your political beliefs/values/opinions, that's your fault - nobody else's.
If RA does not crack down on such off-topic political fights, I will close my account and never again use or visit the SOWNY board.

Do you recall why the person mentioned in the initial comments cancelled their subscription? I think it’s important to point out how the Canadian newspapers have taken a hard right turn, granted it’s not radio or TV.

I seem to be fighting a losing battle about keeping partisan politics from ruining what we have here. But I get it - it's close to one of the most consequential elections in U.S. history and it's top of mind for many. Which leads to our own political problems. But try as I might, this keeps happening.
Look, I love talking politics. Just not here. If it's about the CRTC making a decision that affects the Canadian media, that's great. If it's JT or PP bashing, it will only lead to acrimony and more division. I've worked too hard to let that happen. So I hope you'll forgive me if I call a halt to this one.
I have no doubt it won't end this, but I value all our members and I hope they'll find another place to let loose their vitriol.
Me? I'm going to listen to the radio...
