Another Radio Tower Crumples In The U.S.

What is going on with radio towers in the U.S.? For the the third time in October, another one has been taken out of service, after one of its guy wires apparently snapped and crumped to the ground near Joplin, Missouri.

This follows a hot air balloon hitting a tower in New Mexico and a helicopter smashing into a second structure in Houston. Four people were killed in that tragedy.

The latest accident took KRMO off the air, although it continued to broadcast online. I'm guessing it's not part of a big organization, because one of the station owners was mowing the lawn near the site when it happened. You don't often see the boss doing that in a big company. It apparently just missed the nearby shack that housed the transmitters. Fortunately, no one was hurt.

I can't recall a tower coming down like this in years, let alone three in one month.

Although these were all accidents, it just may be a kind of sad metaphor for radio's ever increasing collapse, as well.

Re: Another Radio Tower Crumples In The U.S.

Most likely caused by neglect...  aging infrastructure, coupled with a lack of qualified structural inspections and then acting on the engineers structural report.

Towers are also subject to extreme weather events...  A lightening strike can do severe damage to the heavy gauge structural steel on a tower.   While it probably won't bring the tower down, it will compromise it. Repairs can and have to be made.

If insurance is looking after the damage, I'd hate to be the one stuck paying the premium fee(s)
