Pete Rose, Baseball's Banned Hit Leader, Dies At 83
I put this up here because I'd just watched an HBO special about Rose turning 80 and his relentless quest to finally get into the Baseball Hall of Fame. In that documentary about his life, he plaintively asked, "Don't wait until I'm dead to do the right thing."
But they did and Charlie Hustle is still not there.
Rose died Monday after an amazing and record breaking baseball career that he tainted with his own gambling addiction, betting on the game he loved to play. He was a frequent interview on radio and TV and a very distinctive personality. But the Hall eluded him in life. Will it continue after his death? Maybe not. After all, he was under a lifetime ban from baseball. That lifetime is now over. He may yet get his final due posthumously.
He was 83.

I was at Olympic Stadium when Rose got his 4,000th hit. He was playing for the Expos. You can probably find it on YouTube.

Charlie Hustle has died. Pete Rose passed away on September 30th at the age of 83. a career that spanned 24 seasons won two World Series titles with his hometown Cincinnati Reds. One of the game’s greatest players had more hits than any other player ever. In 1986 Rose unofficially retired as a player. Managing the Reds in 1989 there were allegations about his betting habits, never admitting to betting on his team. Unfortunately, Rose received a lifetime ban from Major League Baseball for betting on baseball while he was still an active manager. The hype about the Pete Rose issue seems very hypocritical. Today any TV baseball game is rife with betting advertisements between each inning encouraging wagering on the game. Given today’s betting climate, perhaps Charlie Hustle’s banishment is questionable.

For whatever reason, this sticks with me as one of the major bones of contention - that Pete wouldn't admit it. I always felt there was a bit of subtext involved: Admit you gambled on the Reds and you may not damage your eligibility for the HoF.
That aside, you're right. In today's climate Pete Rose would fit right in - I can't believe nobody signed him as a spokesperson. Sure would have been better than those dreadful Bet Rivers spots. Yes, all the gambling ads are atrocious but those bet Rivers spots are the worst of them all.

Hypocritical of MLB to keep Rose out of the Hall of Fame while baseball freely promotes betting on their games.
Best compromise: Induct him as a player only and not as a manager. There's no documentation of Rose gambling on baseball during his playing days, just during his time as a manager.
