Kris Kristofferson Gone At 88

The man who wrote the classic "Me & Bobby McGee," among others, and acted in many movies, has passed.

Kris Kristofferson was a legend during his lifetime, with stories that didn't always quite stand up to scrutiny. But they sure were fun to tell.

"Johnny Cash liked to tell a mostly exaggerated story of how Kristofferson, a former U.S. Army pilot, landed a helicopter on Cash’s lawn to give him a tape of “Sunday Mornin’ Comin’ Down” with a beer in one hand.

Over the years in interviews, Kristofferson said with all respect to Cash, while he did land a helicopter at Cash’s house, the Man in Black wasn’t even home at the time, the demo tape was a song that no one ever actually cut and he certainly couldn’t fly a helicopter holding a beer."

As if landing a chopper on a singer's house wasn't enough by itself!

Kristofferson was 88.

Re: Kris Kristofferson Gone At 88

"Sunday Mornin' Comin' Down" is one of my all time favourites.

"I woke up Sunday morning with no way to hold my head that didn't hurt.
And the beer I had for breakfast wasn't bad, so I had one more for dessert."

Classic.

I also really love Lightfoot's version of "Me And Bobby McGee." I believe it predated Janis' version by a year or so.

RIP Kris.

RIP indeed.

The number of versions within 1 year of Me And Bobby McGee is bountiful.    Several artists covering the same song is probably unlikely today.

From Wikipedia:

""Me and Bobby McGee" is a song written by American singer-songwriter Kris Kristofferson and originally performed by Roger Miller. Fred Foster shares the writing credit, as Kristofferson wrote the song based on a suggestion from Foster.  A posthumously released version by Janis Joplin topped the Billboard Hot 100 in 1971, making the song the second posthumously released No. 1 single in U.S. chart history after "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay" by Otis Redding. Gordon Lightfoot released a version that reached number 1 on the Canadian country charts in 1970. Jerry Lee Lewis released a version that was number 1 on the country charts in December 1971/January 1972 as the "B" side of "Would You Take Another Chance on Me". Billboard ranked Joplin's version as the No. 11 song for 1971.In 2002, the 1971 version of the song by Janis Joplin on Columbia Records was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.
