So it was an attack of opportunity on some negligence by CTV (which ultimately is based on the owner's incompetence running a media organisation).

Hate to bring up the spectre of politics here again, because I know the dam burst of extreme partisanship that follows on both sides. But I'm making an exception to the rule here because this is a fascinating look at what one writer insists really happened in the mis-editing of a clip involving the Opposition leader on CTV.
And he names the names of those involved - including the now apparently unemployed reporter Cristina Tenaglia.
It's quite the read.
I found out what really happened between Pierre Poilievre and CTV. The real story was even more depressing than the lie

The one thing I can say on re-reading this is, regardless of intent, they should never, ever, ever have spliced in a phrase or other words from a different clip in order to "save time." Not only is it hard to pull off on TV, where everything has to be covered with a visual (it's easier to do on radio) but it leaves you open to exactly this kind of thing.
I've edited out hours of stuff for time - but only from the exact same interview. It would never have occurred to me to go back in the archive somewhere and try to find some matching words just to save a few precious on air seconds. Because this is exactly what can happen if you get caught.
And they did.
It may not be what one political party thinks it was, but it's still not a good look on CTV. And I hope they learned their lesson.

I agree, and the Star article is off base. The two individuals involved were also were experienced and know better. Not having a Lisa Laflamme or Joyce Napier watching over them is not the issue. And splicing something else in from another part of the interview to make up a 1.5 second timing difference sounds weak. The edit changed the impression of what was said. There were lots of other ways to fill the 1.5 second gap.
Overall the Conservatives have overreacted but this also makes CTV news look pretty bad.

I don't know about you all, but if I were a top federal politician I would demand CTV admit their mistake on air, and profusely apologize and make it clear the Conservatives have no intention to call an election on the back of the dental plan.
Then I'd say to CTV, OK incident closed don't do that again.
Oh, and please don't fire anybody, I don't want anybody to lose their livelihood in these tough economic times brought about by Justin Trudeau and the horrible Liberals. But as a Conservative I'm bigger than that.

The second season of the absolutely wonderful The Newsroom has a terrific storyline about a questionable story being aired, if you're looking for a new show to binge and haven't seen Will and company yet. The resolution is very satisfying and realistic.

"The Newsroom" was a superb show. Sorkin firing on all cylinders.
I still chuckle that Jeff Daniels as 'Will McAvoy' is so good but was also one of the 'Dumb & Dumber" dudes : )) ..
The opening scene of the first episode aptly demonstrates it's brilliance.
*sigh* 12 years later & nothings changed, in fact it's worse ..
