One thing that Toronto's two struggling AM talk radio stations seem to lack (in addition to having any fun) is a real scarcity of show biz news or features.
Just read that Kelsey Grammar and Canadian co-star Jess Salgueiro were in town a few days ago promoting the new Frasier from Paramount +. Toronto just wrapped up the second most important film festival in the world with TIFF and the city was abuzz with glamour and some of films biggest stars for 11 days.
You would never know it listening to the talk stations. Did anyone try to arrange with Paramount to do a live interview with Kelsey from the Bluma Appel Theatre where he was promoting the show? Even just a 10 minutes interview would have been a nice change from all of the complaining, politics and opinion.
Our two AM talkers are bogged down too much with the latest protests downtown and boring listeners with the latest "crisis" at city hall. Clearly this isn't working since the ratings for both are dreadful and have been for years.
Show Biz news should be on going, maybe even with a daily cast with the latest on who is in the city and what they are here for. The old CFRB and newsman Gordon Sinclair weren't afraid to delve deeply into entertainment news with the hugely popular Let's Be Personal weekdays before 12noon.
Even CBC radio one has a daily entertainment show with the popular Q weekday mid mornings.
Toronto is one of the major film and television production centres in North America but our local media, including talk radio, don't seem to reflect this. And they should 52 weeks a year.

Hear, Here! I think John Moore could be better utilized in a major way. He has show biz smarts, and seemed to showcase this more when he did his afternoon show. John would often have Ann Shatilla on talking about Hollywood gossip. There was the cocktail hour and a great theme and bumper music from Kill Bill (Battle Without Honour, something ...)
John playing quarterback to a bunch of pundits and panelists seem tired and limiting. Roundtables were getting harder to bear back when I last listened, when it was always Jerry and Deb lined up with Scott Reid. The topical positions of Marc Warner and Laura Babcock were always predictable. Amanda Gailbraith seems to think all of the topics are ho-hum, and never seems to care about being there. Shelley Carroll tries to be a polished city politician. Sigh! See what I mean? Maybe it has improved lately, and RA did say Alan Carter is on now, so hopefully there is some betterment of the segments.
But given that patterson1 has revisited the lack of pop culture programming on 1010 and 640, methinks, perhaps not.

1010 wouldn't have even needed to go to or call into him at the theatre.....he was downstairs.

Totally agree with paterson1 and Jody T.
When the majority of the pundits and even the show hosts start to sound bored with the same ol' same ol' selection of topics it's time for a rebuild? reboot? refresh? Whatever you want to call it, change is needed at Newstalk 1010.
Regular stories on show biz, pop culture, events going on in the city for a start. Follow up by involving the listeners.
Randomly give away a pair of tickets to an upcoming event or to the movies in Toronto out of the blue in the middle of the show.
We've got the clocks going back in about a month. How about helping listeners by interviewing a few experts on ways to minimize the impact on meal times and sleep schedules for young children, teens and adults. There's enough time to gradually adjust over a couple of weeks.
With the end of summer sunshine comes the opportunity to change up the lighting inside the home. Invite someone, Tommy Smythe, or Sarah Richardson for example to Newstalk to chat about how and why switching some of the warm white lightbulbs to bright white and daylight lightbulbs can make a noticeable and positive difference. And when to use the cooler toned bulbs. Also a chat about the different sources of light a room needs, eg. task lighting, a reading lamp etc. A discussion about adding easy to care for plants to cheer up a room and increase the oxygen etc. might even be of interest. Go totally overboard with a tutorial on how to keep those beautiful orchids they keep selling in the grocery store alive...
Find a local dog trainer for John Moore and help him train Rory and take listeners along for the journey with progress updates via the airwaves and posts on X. John's been upfront on MITM about his inability to teach his terror, er, terrier the most basic of good pet obedience. 1010 could even turn it into a sponsored bit. Doggone It with Rory and John.
Alan Carter was a pleasure to listen to last week. Will he be interested in a larger role and will Newstalk management be smart enough to make the job offer sweet enough for him to want to...
1010's on and off air talent need to find the heart and energy to expand the topics they talk about. They'll be happier and so will the listeners.

CKTB does a good job handling pop culture. Their local hosts are very at ease talking about sports, entertainment, and humour. The station does pick up programming from Newstalk 1010 and the quality goes down and we are back to the politics, opinion, complaining and general negativity. As various posters have mentioned in the past, both 1010 and 640 need to lighten up.

And therein lies some of the problem with this suggestion - if a Toronto show airs in other markets, including St. Catharines, the idea of talking about local places to go in T.O. would lose the audience in other cities. It was one of my biggest complaints about the 7PM Jim Richards Show before it was replaced. It was supposedly nationwide and almost every topic was about some issue going on in Toronto.
It got so bad, he actually used to apologize for doing it. But he just kept it up anyway. Thankfully that show is finished but it's one of the problems with doing local on an Ontario-wide or Canada-wide show. And they have a lot of those.
That said, they could broaden things by introducing something other than politics into the topic mix.

Back in the day, AM680 had fairly decent show biz coverage with Gloria Martin and Rudy Blair. Although they were not talk radio, they kept me up to date and often brought my attention to events etc. that I wasn’t aware of. Miss them!

I agree that both 640 and 1010 could "lighten up" topics-wise - but I have no need for Access Hollywood/Entertainment Tonight/Etalk type celebrity gossip.

I agree, the last thing we need is more fluff like Access Hollywood etc. If either or both 640 and 1010 had more of an emphasis on the entertainment scene in Toronto/Southern Ontario would be ideal. But also when the stars are in town, try to interview them, or at least talk about it. As mentioned above Rudy Blair and Gloria Martin did this in spades years ago on 680 News.
But I don't agree that an interview with someone like Kelsey Grammar when he was recently in Toronto would turn off anyone in St. Catharines or Winnipeg for that matter. It's a feature not a three hour show. And better talking about entertainment than interviewing Olivia Chow or one of the city councillors about Toronto's traffic problem or the downtown homeless. That would be a tune out if ran in other markets.
Some pop culture and entertainment news on the Toronto AM talkers would be a nice change and a chance for the hosts to get away from so much opinion "round table" radio, which is overdone. Toronto always has a lot of well known entertainers in town both local and international. Why not take advantage of something that many other cities don't have so much of?

I think Shane Hewitt is trying to incorporate more of the non-political into his night show on CFRB and the rest of the network. It can be pretty entertaining.
