DVR Alert: A Week Of Musical Specials On WNED With A Toronto Highlight

Can you say Pledge Week Alert? I suspect we might see a lot of begging going on, as Buffalo’s Channel 17 schedules an incredible week of specials every single night of the week. The WNED interface is a nightmare to navigate so I’ve listed them below with their descriptions. But there’s at least one that seems to be can’t miss.

It’s on Wednesday Sept. 4th at 9:30 PM and it’s called “Revival 69: The Concert That Rocked The World.” It’s about the now legendary show at Toronto’s Varsity Stadium in 1969 that wound up featuring John Lennon – an appearance that made it hugely important but was anything but assured until the very last minute.

The official description:

“A young concert promoter launches a festival in 1969 to revive the kings of rock 'n' roll and present new bands. John Lennon's performance with the Plastic Ono Band triggers him to leave the Beatles.”

That sounds like a must see and is worth setting your DVR for. I believe the film had its debut in Toronto a while ago, but up until now has never been on free TV.

Here’s what else you can watch:

Mon. Sept. 2

8 PM: Elton John: The Million Dollar Piano

Elton John performs his hits in a 2012 concert at The Colosseum at Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas.

9:30 PM: Bruce Springsteen's Nebraska: A Celebration In Words and Music

Eric Church, Emmylou Harris, Noah Kahan, Lyle Lovett, The Lumineers and Lucinda Williams explore the 1982 album. Hosted by Warren Zanes, the program features performances of Springsteen's songs with spoken word storytelling.

Tues. Sept. 3

8 PM: Tina Turner: One Last Time

Filmed on 18 cameras at London's Wembley Stadium, TINA TURNER: ONE LAST TIME is as spectacular as the legendary Tina Turner. Her energetic and moving performance includes hits such as "River Deep Mountain High," "Let's Stay Together," "What's Love Got to Do With It, " "The Best," and "Proud Mary."

9:30 PM: Chicago & Friends: Live At 55

The Rock and Roll Hall-of-Famers perform their greatest hits and are joined by special guests including Chris Daughtry and Robin Thicke.

Wed. Sept. 4

8 PM: John & Yoko: Above Us Only Sky

Discover how the couple's unique relationship led to the creation of the iconic 1971 album Imagine. The film features new interviews with Yoko, Lennon's son Julian, and others who knew the couple best, along with archival footage, audio and photos.

9:30 PM: Revival 69: The Concert That Rocked The World

As described above.

Thurs. Sept. 5

8 PM: Bruce Springsteen's Nebraska: A Celebration In Words and Music

A repeat of Monday’s show.

9:30 PM: The Brothers - Celebrating The Allman Brothers Band 50th Anniversary

Celebrate 50 years of the Allman Brothers Band's music with Jaimoe, Warren Haynes, Derek Trucks, Oteil Burbridge, Marc Quinones, Duane Trucks, Reese Wynans and Chuck Leavell in this 2020 concert at Madison Square Garden.

Fri. Sept. 6

8 PM: Four Phantoms In Concert

A star studded tribute to the stage musical “The Phantom Of The Opera.”

9:30 PM New Kids on the Block: Iheart Radio Live

Celebrate the enduring legacy of the iconic boy band that continues to capture the hearts of millions. Featuring the pop anthems, dance tracks and love songs that are fan favorites of the Blockheads, including "Step By Step," and "Cover Girl."

Sat. Sept. 7

10 PM: Fleetwood Mac: The Dance

Recorded in 1997, Fleetwood Mac: The Dance marks the return of the band's most successful line-up of Lindsey Buckingham, Mick Fleetwood, Christine McVie, John McVie, and Stevie Nicks, who had not released an album together since 1987's Tango in the Night. The group performs "Go Your Own Way," "The Chain," "Landslide," "Gold Dust Woman," and "Gypsy." The USC Marching Band adds a memorable touch to the performance during "Tusk" and "Don't Stop."

Re: DVR Alert: A Week Of Musical Specials On WNED With A Toronto Highlight

On that Toronto concert film, I'm not sure if it's in the movie, but there's a radio connection.

The story goes that the desperate promoter tried to convince CHUM-FM that John Lennon was on his way from the U.K. to perform at Varsity Stadium. But at first, the station didn't believe him and refused to mention anything on air.

Only after it was confirmed did the prog rock FM decide to tell everyone. And that's when it exploded.

I hope that aspect of the story is told because it became a big part of the legendary success of the show.

I recommend Revial69.  I saw it last night along with finishing up a great almost 3 hour interview with Johnny Brower by Bob Leftsetz where Johnny, the producer of the concert, spent most of his time with great stories about being back stage at Woodstock, running The Rockpile (bringing The Who, Led Zep etc. to Toronto) and of course the subject of Revival69, John Lennon and company at the concert.     Here's a link to the podcast.    Also, I streamed the documentary on Hoopla, accessible through having a Toronto Public Library card.   Pretty cool, and free!

Brower talks about it in depth, including why he refused to get 'radio people' to MC the concert and hired Kim Fowley and Rodney Bingenheimer, who'd been flown in from Los Angeles.   His reasons are solid too.   Fowley had the idea to get John Lennon as well, so without him the show would have crashed and burned.    CHUM wasn't cooperating until Lennon had an impromptu press conference at Heathrow airport announcing his imminent trip to Toronto so they finally believed Brower's story.   Too bad it was too late to be involved  except to spread the word on the air claiming it to be a 'CHUM exclusive', which is wasn't.  They found out by reading their news teletype like everybody else.

Thanks for confirming that. If CHUM had been smart, they would have made a few phone calls to confirm and perhaps could have had a publicity bonanza. Although they did wind up spreading the word, so it saved his bacon.

Looking forward to seeing this on Wednesday.

The Chicago show interests me. Transit Authority is still one of my favourite albums .

One slight but important correction to the listings above. The John & Yoko special on Wed. Sept 4th actually starts at 7:30 PM, not 8. I believe it's the only time where that happens. Most DVRs should already have it.
