Friday Morning's Drivetime Talk Shows Present A Real Challenge

I'm not sure which of the usual AM talkers to listen to on Friday morning. There are reasons both may be more interesting than usual.

John Moore will be on CFRB as usual, but with an added secret sauce. Robert Turner, now a station manager, is subbing behind the board for one day only. I well remember when he was doing it fulltime and he'd frequently pop in with a comment or intrusion that would burst the host's balloon and I often found his observations both hilarious and in accord with my own. At the very least, his outbursts would give you a very different perspective.

It's a rare return to the control room and he has a way of puncturing pomposity with a single sentence that I've always admired.

Meanwhile, over on AM640, Greg Brady has the day off and is being replaced by supersub Ben Mulroney. As I've noted here before, he's growing on me as a talk show host and when's freed from some of the strictures of his weekend show (i.e. a real estate segment, an activities segment, a medical segment etc.) and just deals with the issues of the day, he can be really compelling.

So which one to pick? I'm thinking I'll be doing a lot of switching between stations come Friday morning!

The answer is simple: Ben Mulroney. He is the future of AM talk radio in this city. John Moore is the past.

His return is for Friday, so if you're still interested, you haven't missed it.

Mulroney is a better host than any of the regulars currently on 640 with the exception of Oakley, but his show is so watered down and low-brow now, he might be an improvement in that slot, too.

When was Oakely ever not low brow?
I tried to give him a chance years ago, but his snickering delivery and low brow bargain basement right wing schtick made it impossible.
I guerss he must get decent ratings, though otherwise why would 640 keep him around so long?

There was a time when Oakley's show was entertaining, as well as informative, with good guests, quality panel discussions and daring enough to tackle politically incorrect topics in a serious manor.  It was good radio back then.

Must have been from before he started grooming Rob Ford.

I haven't listened to Oakley for quite a while - is he still doing the pretty constant "High Street Fish and Chips" ad reads?

There is no future for A.M. Radio sorry.

New cars are going to be electric.  Due to shielding interference, they won't have AM Radios but they will have streaming and internet and on demand audio.

The future of FM is bleak too, maybe a few years left before it's completely irrelevant.

Not for years.  These days, it's all about Tom, Jiffy App and Frank Leo.  Same script as John Moore's regular shilling.

Re: Friday Morning's Drivetime Talk Shows Present A Real Challenge

Robert Turner first, Ben second with the podcasts of both shows to be enjoyed again in their entirety over the long weekend.

I've become a firm fan of the current regular MITM board team but sure wish 1010 would give listeners a break from the old ZZ Top et all bumpers that are so so so stale and overplayed. Q leftovers do nothing for the sound of the show.

Perhaps we'll get a fresh bumper crop of bumpers harvested this fall Robert Turner? 🤞🤞🤞
