Ex-CFGM & CHAM Country Disc Jockey Has Died

I'll be the first to admit I didn't know the name Tom Tompkins, but he had quite the radio career, working not only for CFGM and CHAM when 820 was country, but with a string of stations out west, including in Edmonton and Calgary.

He passed away this week, many years after veering out of radio and becoming president of the Canadian Country Music Association. The multiple award winning Toronto native had been suffering from cancer.

I met Tom when he was programming MediaNet.
RIP. That's all I am going to say.

Worked against, with and around Tom in Calgary. He was a rock star at CJAY, ahead of the game launching Bob Redmond's CKRY with his outlaw outlook on Country and a fine addition to a gonzo team as the sports guy at KIK. Collaborated with him at Pelmorex. One word describes Tom Tompkins  - Genuine.  RIP glad I knew him.

What a shame.    I worked for a few years with Tom in Mississauga when the Pelmorex Radio Network was located there.   At times, Tom had quite the mouth on him.   He was a good broadcaster, though.
