Global Anchor's Emotional Farewell After Local Newscast Cancelled
Global Okanagan, which until Tuesday broadcast local news from Kelowna, B.C., has effectively been cancelled thanks to Corus' ongoing financial woes.
The show will continue, but will be done remotely, bringing to an end a six decade-long presence in the community.
In the final show on Tuesday, anchor Jamie Tawil was visibly emotional as he said goodbye to viewers. If the name sounds familiar, he worked for many years at AM640. I love the big sigh before he launched into his final farewell.
Another sad sign of the times.

Very emotional and not easy to do I'm sure.
At least he got to say goodbye to viewers, sadly many do not get that opportunity.

I feel for Mr. Tawil and I did recognize his name. The crappy thing is that most of the broadcast personalities know that their chances of continuing their careers after a lay-off is very slim given the state of traditional broadcasting these days. Sad sign of the times indeed RA.

Also recognized the name... we were both at Loyalist in Belleville at the same time in the early 2000s; he was in the broadcast journalism program while I was in the radio program.

This article from Broadcast Dialogue about a reunion and public farewell for the staff of CKWS Kingston quotes long-time anchor Bill Hutchins on why he refused the offer to record a "goodbye" segment:
“The more I thought about it…it seemed hollow, like a hostage video…blink twice,” said Hutchins. “I opted not to do that. I didn’t think it was right. I didn’t think it would do much of a service to myself or viewers. It just wasn’t the kind of goodbye that I wanted and the kind of goodbye viewers deserved and so that is what’s behind organizing this ourselves as a union.”

I have noticed that the Global news in their smaller markets generally seem to be a higher calibre than CTV. The on air talent seems a bit more polished and natural in front of the camera. I find too many of the on air people at CTV stations like Kitchener, London and Windsor seem to lack confidence and are very stilted when it comes to speaking live to a reporter or just general banter. I am not talking about Global's large markets but places like Kingston, Peterborough, and this clip from Kelowna. Any of the newscasts or clips I have watched over the years generally seem to be a higher quality than CTV.
I have heard in most markets from Manitoba out to BC that Global's newscasts normally are rated higher than CTV.
