Telecoms should unlock FM radio on smartphones

Toronto Mayor John Tory's executive committee is expected to consider a motion Tuesday calling on the city to ask telecom companies to activate the FM radio chip inside Android smartphones. Coun. Mary Fragedakis, who presented the motion, understands why telecom companies may not be rushing to turn on the free FM radio function in their smartphones. "Obviously, there is a lot of money to be made in data usage, but this issue is more about the safety of the public," said Fragedakis...

Thank goodness they've solved the homeless issue in Toronto, the shitty TTC, traffic, and all the areas that these clowns are supposed to be concentrating on, and they can now invest money taking on the communications giants.  The reciever built into the LTE modem can pick up FM, but reception is limited, and if it's truly an 'emergency' situation, then enable the radio to be fired off when emergency tones are sent and turned off after.

But 'safety' isn't really the issue.  Text messaging and a plethora of other methods will take care of that.  what happens if the user isn't in range of an FM tower? So it's not something they can rely on, which I'd pretty much want if it involved a life or death situation, as opposed to a PR exercise.

Headphones are killing ppm ratings, the next 'thing' would be demanding listening data be made available to see who's listening to these FM Stations.

It's not an awful idea, it's just something 'city' council should worry about right after they figure out how TCHC can get rid of falling in walls and ceilings, rats and roaches in a huge number of 'our' buildings.

Clowns.

What about IOS phones?   That's about 40% of the current market isn't it?

Conservatives are the problem though, when you think of it.
