I came across this article in English about an experiment in broadcasting in Germany. They're going to test something called 5G TV. I've certainly heard about 5G when it comes to cell phones, and I'm familiar with both HDTV and 4K, the latter of which has yet to become entirely mainstream.
But what, exactly, does 5G TV do that's different from the others and could this this actually become a new standard? And is there really any reason to keep looking for new ways to propagate broadcast signals? Is this TV for phones or something else? Have to say I've never heard of it.
The test comes even though those behind it admit no one can really see it.
"There are currently no 5G broadcast-capable devices available on the market, but the joint development of the technology by those involved from industry, network operators and politics is progressing, so that 5G broadcast-capable devices will be available to end users in the future."
Sounds like just one more thing they want you to spend your money on. But I guess we'll see. Whether that will be in 5G is another matter.

So I just found this on the web, which provides some further explanation. But is this really needed? Would you watch broadcast TV on your phone on a regular basis?
"Rohde & Schwarz EVP and head of broadcast & media division Jürgen Nies said: "The introduction of 5G could open up a worldwide market with millions of smartphones and tablets acting as potential TV receivers able to combine live TV services, media libraries, social networks and many other media services."
