CFGQ the former Q107 tried a talk format for a while before getting into problems with the CRTC. The station is changing to something else..but seem to be in transition right now...and when is the new format??.

Sounds like they want the listener to be tuned in @ 7AM for the new format, not 9. Did I hear wrong?

107.3 The Edge has officially launched in Calgary.

The Edge prediction was 100% accurate. First song : Welcome to Paradise by Green Day.

107.3 The Edge. Calgary's Iconic Alternative. First track is Green Day's "Welcome To Paradise"; second is The Cars' "Just What I Needed". Cute theme developing.

So, bit of a different format than here. It's Classic Alternative.
Online!
Alan Cross weighs in, noting the station is also the new home of the Calgary Stampeders.
Calgary gets Canada its first-ever classic alternative radio station

Oh well. Whatever. Nevermind.

Alan Cross in the article titled "Calgary gets Canada its first-ever classic alternative radio station,"
posted by RadioActive, said "At least I’m pretty sure it’s the country’s first."
It's not the first in Canada. It's not even the first in Calgary.
Stingray's AMP 90.3 in Calgary was initially and formerly FUEL 90.3 and in December 2007 it rebranded as "Calgary's Classic Alternative" -

Also, 98.9 The Drive in Kingston launched as Classic Alt

But other than that, he was right!

The music mix is fantastic.

I agree they sound great. It is always interesting to see how they sound in 6-9 months from now and how they have been accepted. Canada's best radio isn't in Toronto. Radio overall in Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary and Ottawa is better IMO.

I was told in May this was going to happen. The only thing was they were going to do it in June but they delayed it for unknown reasons. Probably the financial issues. Apparently this is going to be a format for some other Corus stations as well. I think this station has the potential to do very well.

A brief aircheck to this morning's launch (no morning show).

I just took a look at their playlist and it looks fairly impressive. I seems that they're not strictly modern alternative rock, but rather a mix of modern and classic alternative rock music from modern cohorts and past generations. This is obviously done to simultaneously partially replace the discontinued classic rock format while also implementing a new format with a new brand and identity, but this also means there's some real meaning in the slogan "Iconic Alternative". I sincerely hope that they invest in the station by means of local personalities, even though the company's financial health is obviously poor. Calgary is one of North America's markets of the future, with the city itself already being roughly the size of Montreal proper and not to mention a magnet for the station's and the industry's desired demographics, so this station is entirely worthy of substantial near-term investment IMHO.

You can see most of their playlist for the sign-on here.
Here's the Corus press release about the start of the station, promising only that they'll be announcing their line-up of on-air people "soon."

Taking a few chances while still playing it safe. Where else might they try this? Will they finally cave in and let CFNY be what it is destined for? Maybe Kingston since the only show Big FM kept is Ongoing History? London? Ottawa? Although Sundays on Live 88.5 are essentially classic all day.

Best OTA for classic alt. is 98.5 CKWR in Kitchener! They go beyond the obvious and have a great all-request show on holidays where you hear stuff not heard since The Spirit of Radio.

I remember being part of a thread here just a few years ago when the idea of this format was raised for Toronto. It's a format whose time has come and I suspect we'll more stations eventually follow .

Everything old is new again. When (C)KIK-FM launched the mix was AOR mainstream Rock and Alt Rock.as witnessed by these KIK / CBS samplers. Featuring the orignal crew lead by the fearless MD Jaime Wohl. (missing in action are Humble Howard and Dan Duran)

They touted themselves as such - Alternative Rewind - when they first signed on. However, soon after they began to mix in a number of much newer tracks. That trend has continued.

They recently went back to all-gold.
