I was watching the CTV Toronto 6pm news and at about 6:27pm switched over to NBC for their newscast only to discover that they were covering true breaking news that Trump habd been shot at his rally in Pennsylvania.
This should have been flashed as a bulletin on every channel but CFTO did not break the story when it happened.
The American networks as well as the Canadian news networks were all over it. I had a strange sensation of Deja vu
from 11.22.63. Actually this incident is not surprising with the proliferation of guns and mentally unfit people who have possession of them as wel as Trump's enemies. Was this a lone shooter and like 61 years ago will we ever know the truth?

Expect the media equivalent of a vomitorium for the next while.

NBC news was a clear leader in the crucial minutes & hours following the event.
NBC's coverage was superb with eye witnesses and local officals on the air well before their competition
CBC took about 45 minutes to get its first mention of the shooting on air
CTV beat them by about two or three minutes
A very unfortunate turn of events

CNN had the shooting live since they had just gone to the venue for the speech about 5 minutes prior. I don't know what other US news networks had the speech live.
CBS, NBC and ABC in Detroit all have network special report coverage still on after 9:30 pm. FOX Detroit had coverage of the Twins/Giants baseball game.
Of the 45 people who have held office of The President of the United States, 13 have had assassination attempts on them, which is 29%. Of the 13 attempts, four resulted in the death of the President.

Unfortunately for those in Buffalo, NBC's coverage of golf went long (what else is new?) so there wasn't any Nightly News broadcast, turning the time over to local affiliates.
When this story broke, WGRZ was still showing their local cast and only eventually went to the NBC coverage. But it took them way too long to get to it. WKBW and WIVB both had ABC and CBS coverage right from the start.

Have to give some kudos to CFRB. On a sleepy summer weekend night in July, with no one in their newsroom, someone made the call to pick up CP24 coverage for an hour on the story, before they got Jim Richards to come in and do live coverage with guests.
None of the other local stations (beyond the expected updates from 680) did anything. CBC stayed with regular radio programming while AM640 was running their usual pre-taped podcast material. I know this is technically an "American story," but it's also one for the history books. The other guys in town were asleep at the wheel.

Most seem to agree all the networks - even Fox - handled the breaking coverage in a responsible way, without unnecessary speculation about who was behind it.
At a Trump rally, shocking images fill TV screens. Then reporters rush to find out what it means

C-SPAN was pulling Pool Duty for the Trump rally in Butler, PA.
So while CNN did have the rally and the beginning of Trump's speech and the subsequent shooting live on their main network using the C-SPAN feed, they could not distribute it live on their Newsource channels (believe me, I scanned the Newsource feeds 4 times looking for the rally).
Reduced weekend staffing is one factor in spinning or reacting fast to breaking news, but another is if you do not have access to the live pictures and sound... at least for the Canadian stations trying to follow and provide coverage...

It takes an awful lot to pre-empt any kind of sporting event on one of the major U.S. networks. But the Trump shooting was one of those rarities. NBC was forced to shunt its coverage of a long scheduled Indy race over to both CNBC and Peacock, thanks to the ongoing emergency coverage that went late into the night Saturday.
It's a small thing, but another sign of what a massive story this was.
Broadcast of IndyCar's Saturday race at Iowa Speedway moved to CNBC, Peacock

Guess the FOX network didn't see the memo.

640 may have been AWOL on Saturday night, but they did a great job on their live Sunday weekend show. Guest host Christine Cardoso was quite good and of course, she has previous news experience.
They also brought out the entire arsenal of personalities to comment on the story - morning man Greg Brady, Corus' Washington correspondent Reggie Cecchini, Roy Green, Alex Pierson, former Toronto homicide cop Hank Idsinga, and even the vacationing Ben Mulroney, who wound up making a special appearance on his own show.
I've complimented Mulroney's ability to relate stories no one else could as a result of his famous dad, and he did it again on Sunday, talking about the security his father faced as Prime Minister of the country. It's a perspective only he could have recounted, since it was part of his very unique lived experience.
All in all, considering it's a sunny weekend in the middle of July when most of the radio industry is half asleep, it was a very good effort.

Somehow, The Simpsons seems to have a hand in everything.

On CTV London, we'll hear about it on Monday night, after the story about a broken parking meter in Kitchener.

Turns out my criticism of the radio silence (due to low staffing on weekends) was repeated endlessly in other markets in the U.S.
And this industry pundit from Detroit - where only one outlet had actual coverage - argues that can't be allowed to happen again.
